A few weeks back in ZSMICHAEL’s thread about investing in down times, I made a light comment about investing in quail hatching eggs, incubators, etc.

Well, first, I wasn’t kidding, and second, today is hatch day!

Brings me back to Pop’s farm 55+ years ago (except my toilet is inside the house)

Oh man, this does bring me back about that same time. Weird thing was, at the time (this was in Viet Nam), no one knew about this quail thing. But, somehow somebody somewhere started a trend about raising quails in the region, and before you knew it, everyone was raising them, and prices went through the roof. My mom had cages and cages of these little things. Then, as suddenly as it came, the fad eventually went *poof*. Very strange.

Quail balut is a pretty profitable sideline in US Asian communities even today.

Beautiful! I wish I could free range mine but between the feral cats and foxes, they wouldn't stand a chance.

Man, how long have you been here, huh? Is there not an actual number of times I can say to keep politics out of apolitical threads, that will actually sink in?

For those who can stomach the grossness, duck balut is much better tasting. Smile

I've tried 12 day quail and actually got it down (barely) No way duck would make it past my lips. Too big. Maybe canary? Big Grin

In that case, eggs for breakfast, meat for dinner. Marsala over rice being my favorite.

I almost bought some quail eggs at the store last month, but I wasn’t sure if there was a special purpose for them.. do you cook them any differently? Are they extra rich or a specialty item for a certain dish (the store doesn’t usually carry them)? Or is it just a smaller version (less calories) of the old chicken egg? Either way, the birds are damn cute.

Awesome. What breed are they? I've always wanted to hatch Gambel Quail.

I guess you could describe them as creamier than chicken eggs. Higher yolk to white ratio. I use them the same as chicken eggs except at a ratio of 3 to 1.

I use to raise ringneck pheasants and some exotic breeds as well. Even had a pair of peacocks at one time. I use to incubate the pheasant eggs all the time. I had a pretty big fly way built off the front of the poultry barn that would get weedy. The pheasant hens would lay eggs out there and nest on them sometimes they would hatch sometimes not but I just let the brooding hens sit on them.

I would butcher some to eat but sell the majority of them live for people to train their dogs with. Pretty good business for a number of years.
