Dealing with something like this is so badass. My MOS dealt with explosives, and I get a small vicarious adrenaline rush just thinking about approaching something like this. Being associated with EOD makes for exciting work days. Those guys doing it in Europe must have one helluva retirement party when someone makes it that far.

Expect they'll use a number of small boats to tow it closer to Keyport.

Can't tell you where it came from, but if EOD is looking into it it is probable they've presumed it to be real. It is near the right base for a response: NUWC and Navy divers work out of the base.

they could always ask the enviro-whackos to come give them a hand - make themselves useful and tow it to a place they deem safe

From the original link the video of the explosion looks anticlimatic, it wasn't as big as you'd have thought considering the size of the mine.

Also it appears there's a second water spout way behind the mine, wonder what that's from.

Pieces of the mine?

To me it appears the blast is just from the Navy-set initiation charge and none of the mine itself. Chances are the mine, over time, leaked and seawater rendered the mine's explosive charge (possibly TNT) inert?

They should have just stuck some fake eyes on it and called greenpeace about some rare endangered species that needed saving.

That without a doubt was the very worst thread I've ever bothered to open. I bet I had to watch a half dozen commercials to see the one explosion. All the while I suffered through my local station showing it go off several times.

I heard that it was some dude named "Rich" that jarred the mines moorings loose when he nose dived a Q4 into a nearby island.
