Buffalo Trace Bourbon for a Newbie
I like my bourbon over rocks...I am not a mixing guy.

If you like Buffalo Trace, you may like Woodford Reserve even more...and then there is Angels Envy after that.

Best regards,

Buffalo Trace is so smooth I drink it neat. A couple drops of water will enhance the flavor, just like good scotch.

It’s good stuff!

My progression was Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Weller Reserve, then Blantons. I pay good money for Blantons, and I have a a bar with over 40 bourbons, and it is still my favorite (although Weller Antique is simply heavenly).

Well, the first sip was a little harsh.

I took a second sip after a few minutes and the taste had changed and was less harsh.

Then 5 minutes later it was much more mellow and tasted pretty good.

^^ That sounds about right.
A few more ice cubes and swish it a little more before the first sip next time.

Before you take a sip - Put s small splash in your hands and rub rigorously like Mr Miaggi. Smell your hands. Then put your nose in the glass, with your mouth 1/3 open breath through your mouth, and exhale through your nose. Then with mouth open, smell slowly, and exhale through mouth. Then take a sip. It will taste differently, and you will get the more refined senses.

Quite amazing how much better and more flavorful it gets after swishing it around.

My father passed away in Oct 2016 so I inherited his special bottles that he was saving for a special occasion. He bought these bottles in the 70's-80's.

Perhaps some day in the future, when I might more appreciate them, I might pop some of them open.

Buffalo Trace is one of my favorite $30 bourbons. I wonder if it's still aged 8 years? $23 is a great price.I picked up a couple bottles at a VA state store when they had their 20% off day so $24.
I enjoy my bourbon over a couple ice cubes letting them melt half way before sipping which chills it as well as adding just enough water.

I like mine with one large cube. It melts slowly so it doesn’t get watery. A little strong at first, but mellows over time. A great way to enjoy a fine bourbon.

Buffalo Trace is a great bourbon that also happens to be reasonably priced. I’ll take it over most high-priced offerings.

Great choice. Enjoy!

Blazé,

Are all Oban’s the same?

As a blasphemous side. My phone corrected Oban to Obama.

They had a limit of 1 bottle per customer.

Always fun to read these Bourbon threads. I don’t drink but I live smack in the middle of Bourbon country so I have sampled most.
Buffalo Trace is about 40 minutes from me and my favorite distillery to visit.
One bottle per customer, that is funny.

Eagle Rare or Blanton’s are likely the best to come from Buffalo Trace but their named bourbon is not too shabby.

Ok, maybe not. I sure do like that Oban 14 though.

Unfortunately, I've only last year started drinking Oban, and I've only had the 14 year old variety. I'm very fond of Highland Scotches with my favorite currently being Dalwhinnie 15, Oban 14, and Aberlour 16.

Total Wine here in Houston is also $23/750mL
Specs is a little more at $24/750mL, but they also have $28/1L bottles. No such 1 bottle restrictions though.

Some of those bottles may be worth real money. A search for the Ardbeg found a sale price of £1,200. Do some research please.

I melt an ice cube about half way then discard the ice cube.
I then will pour approximately 2 oz of Blanton over the cold water.
When I drink Four Roses single barrel or Makers Mark I pour 2 oz over one to two ice cubes.
To me different bourbons have different characteristics so I like to try different ways of drinking them and this what I found I like best.
