Just received a bid to construct a 28x36 shop. I requested it to be conditioned with a mini-split and the bid includes Carrier Performance 40MAQB18B-3 and 38MAQB18R-3, single zone Highwall and Outdoor. I've mostly heard of Mitsubishi is Carrier ok when it comes to these units? No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Am I reading it correctly that there is only 1 zone for a 28x36 shop? If that's correct it sounds like you're going to have some serious temperature differentials. Especially since it's a wall cassette (they also make ceiling cassettes). A two zone 1.5 ton (18,000 BTU) would have less temperature differential. My 3 car garage in Alaska was slightly smaller than 28x36. My gas furnace was in one corner by the water heater and the opposite corner was a good 10 degrees cooler. Snow melted a lot faster off my truck parked near the furnace than it did off my snowblower which was in the far corner. I bet my garage furnace's fan kicked out more cfm too. I have a single Mitsubishi in my 20 x 25 garage. No issues... Concrete floor with PVC tiles, std insulation in walls, exposed to outside on three walls. Unit keeps up just fine... _____________________________ Pledge allegiance or pack your bag! I've had a Carrier ductless split heat pump/air conditioning system in my house for four years now. I love it, it works great and has been problem free so far. "If Gun Control worked, Chicago would look like Mayberry, not Thunderdome" - Cam Edwards

Yes, but your garage is 500 sq ft versus the OP's proposed 1008 sq ft. Additionally, free standing shops tend to be taller than garages so the difference in cubic feet (i.e. volume of air to heat/cool) will likely be even more than double. On top of that, having four walls exposed will also have a greater impact on temperature differentials between the cartridge and the furthest point from the cartridge. The carrier units are fine. We install quite a few of them and they are trouble free. I am guessing the main reason for the unit is to control the humidity and to keep the shop reasonably cool, not to hang meat in there, a ton and a half should be plenty.

They’re all made in Asia Carrier is a Gree or Medea, the Performance is the mid grade, what I would buy We sell tons of them and have very few problems that aren’t goober install related, and they’re not difficult to install I would prefer a two zone system as well in a Bldg that size Depending on insulation/windows/how much sunlight you might get by with two 12k hi walls Just for reference, we sell a 24k outdoor, and 2 12k hi walls for $2300 I quit school in elementary because of recess.......too many games --Riff Raff--

We gonna get some oojima in this house! |
I would let an HVAC contractor run the numbers. He will let you know what will work, and how well it will work. Systems need be designed if you wamt optimum cooling. If you are just controlling the humidity and taking the edge off it would be fine. ----------------------------------------------------------- TCB all the time...

I'm thinking strong about adding a dual zone mini split to my shop and garage. I can't even work in there with this heat and humidity. I'm thinking of going DIY with the MrCool product. I bet your contractor would want over $5k to install a system you could likely do yourself in a day, especially if your electrical was in place. Around 2 grand gets you your mini split and 5 year parts warranty, 7 on the compressor. They are slightly less efficient than a Mitsubishi, Fujitsu or Daikin and a tad noisier but their warranty is better than the rest (don't quote me though) I've heard Ingrams water & air is a great retailer. If I buy, it will be from them.

Is there anything specific I should look for or stay away from regarding mini splits? What about the shops that do the installs, etc? We have radiant heat in our 4bd garrison colonial, and mini splits are about the only option for our house (and more appealing than a SpacePak type unit). “The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false-face for the urge to rule it.”—H.L. Thanks everyone, I'm satisfied now it'll work just fine for my application. And sorry for the double post!!! ElKabong what you sell for $2,300 seems like a great price because the contractor said the single head unit he included in his bid was $4,000. The building will be very well insulated and just 9' ceiling so it should be easy to heat/cool. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

That is the dealer price, although some enterprising end users will buy them and install themselves. If you have good carpentry and electrical skills, it's not too bad. But you will have to pay someone to pull a vacuum on the indoor unit/line set. You can buy the things on eBay fer crissakes! Good luck if you have a warranty issue though.
