If you like being out on the water try visiting the islands off of Portland, even stay a night.

In North Conway take NH Rt. 112 Kancamagus Highway.

Take the scenic train.

Mt. Washington

Have lunch at Bretton Woods.

Have breakfast at Pollys

If you are going to North Conway after Portland don't go via US 302. Drive up ME Rt. 26 / 17 to Rangeley lakes, then cross into NH at Errol, NH and drive down NH Rt. 16 through Berlin and past the Mt. Washington Auto Road to North Conway.

try the Attitash Alpine slide

I second the Rangeley suggestion- one of my favorite getaways. Grab a ride on the floatplane (Acadian Seaplanes on Main Street) and do some moose spotting.

The Mount Washington cog railway is cool as well. I’d put that on my list.

Hit the Maine Diner in Portland for breakfast but be prepared to have an energetic day set up to burn off all that food.
Also there is a Botanical Garden in Boothbay that is awesome. I am NOT a plant guy but was quite impressed when we spent time there. The ocean climate allows plants to thrive there that are not generally survivable at that lattitude. It truly was a very interesting place which I did not expect.

If you like mountains, Mt.Washington is the real deal. Drive up or cog railway.

In Boston, visit the city Aquarium and the USS Constitution. Photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/...s/72157627408961253/

Mt. Washington. Was there in 2005. If you have back problems, drive up--don't take the cog railway. Photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/...ms/72157631905145283

Loon Mountain. Nice drive over. Photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/...ms/72157631909829080

Around North Conway, NH. Photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/...ms/72157631900343219

Coastal Maine. In 2005 I visited friends in China, ME and we spent a day driving to various locations on the coast. Photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/...s/72157631966158254/

Maybe those will give you some ideas.

For food in North Conway, definitely check out Delaney's hole in the wall in North Conway, and the Red Parka in Bartlett.

Great ideas! We're working a bunch of them into the itinerary. The Rangely route looks interesting.

I drove south from North Conway on NH-16 and ate at the Yankee Smokehouse at the intersection with NH-25. Good food. Was a lot of Harley riders there that day, all well behaved. On the way back to my lodging in North Conway I stopped at the North Country Whittler--an artist who sculpts with a chain saw (very well, too). A few photos in the Album I posted above for North Conway. It's about 25 miles to the restaurant from North Conway.

It is a nice drive, especially in the fall.

Depending on when you go in June you may encounter a few motorcycles on the road.

Just draw a 20 mile radius around Laconia and avoid being within it during that 9 day period though the ultimate weekend will be the worst.

For me, L.L. Bean is a must see in Portland.

Thanks, I stand corrected.
