Knopfler is one of the finest guitarists that has ever lived. Huge fan of him solo and with Dire Straits.

Looking forward to get my vintage amp back from being refurbished next year and listening to their work from my vinyl collection.

Although admittedly I was a late adopter of CDs being a died-in-the-wool vinyl and tape guy, my first CD was Dire Strait's Money for Nothing. I still enjoy it all these decades later! Big Grin

Knopfler is my favorite guitarist and I still listen to Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler's music on a regular basis. I have every one of their LPs and CDs. I even have the EP with "Twisting by the Pool" on it. His latest CD, Down the Road Wherever is really good as well.

I've always liked Dire Straits. A little embarrassing to admit but I really like Skate Away.

Thanks to Bytes for this thread.

However, many thanks to heathtx for introducing me to Telegraph Road. Found it quickly on YT and fortunately, someone posted the lyrics in the comments.

Born in Detroit and grew up next to Telegraph Road. It used to be known as "bloody Telegraph Road," for all the accidents.

The lyrics are impressive. They really convey a lot of how this area was long ago and also now as the hard times repeat.

Recall one of my favorite Dire Straits videos was Roller Girl.

Mark Knopfler is hands down one of the most prolific song writers as well as an awesome musician
Both he and Greg Lake have filled my life with so much great music

There are uncensored versions on YouTube. Here are the original lyrics:

Dire Straits Lyrics
"Money For Nothing"

I want my—I want my MTV [4x]

Now look at them yo-yos, that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on the MTV
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Money for nothin' and your chicks for free

Now that ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Lemme tell ya them guys ain't dumb
Maybe get a blister on your little finger
Maybe get a blister on your thumb

We got to install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We got to move these refrigerators
We got to move these colour TVs

See the little faggot with the earring and the make-up
Yeah buddy that's his own hair
That little faggot got his own jet airplane
That little faggot he's a millionaire

We got to install microwave ovens
Custom kitchens deliveries
We got to move these refrigerators
We got to move these colour TVs

We got to install microwave ovens
Custom kitchens deliveries
We got to move these refrigerators
We got to move these colour TVs

I shoulda learned to play the guitar
I shoulda learned to play them drums
Look at that mama, she got it stickin' in the camera man
We could have some fun

And he's up there, what's that? Hawaiian noises?
Bangin' on the bongoes like a chimpanzee
Oh, that ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Get your money for nothin', get your chicks for free

We got to install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We got to move these refrigerators
We got to move these colour TVs

Listen here

Now that ain't workin' that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on the MTV
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Money for nothin' and your chicks for free

Money for nothin' and chicks for free
Get your money for nothin' and your chicks for free
Money for nothin', chicks for free
Get your money for nothin', chicks for free

Money for nothin', chicks for free
Get you money for nothin', get your chicks for free
Get you money for nothin', and the chicks for free
Get you money for nothin', and the chicks for free

Look at that, look at that

I want my—I want my—I want my MTV [repeat until the end]

Get you money for nothin', and the chicks for free
Money for nothin', chicks for free
Get you money for nothin', and the chicks for free
Get you money for nothin', and the chicks for free

Easy-easy money for nothin', easy-easy chicks for free
Easy-easy money for nothin', chicks for free

That ain't workin'

Money for nothin' chicks for free
Money for nothin' chicks for free

As others have said, Knopfler makes incredible music look easy. I’ve seen him twice with Dire Straits and four times solo. No glitz, no flash. He just walks on stage and plays great music.

As for his production skills, I have to plead ignorance - except I recall reading that he built his own studio using old school equipment because he thought the music sounded better.

Yep. I think he even apologized for it and said he wouldn't do it again nowadays.

I have been a huge fan of his solo work and from that, backed into the Dire Straits stuff. Saw him live at the Ryman last fall. It was a great night with a great performance.

most enjoyable evening revisiting some tunes from old favorites; I was rather startled to suddenly discover 40 years creeping up on the performers.

Is there a Dire Straits best of compilation that anyone can recommend?

Looking for original recordings as they played on the individual CD's. Maybe digitally cleaned up but not a new version.

Nothing worse than a studio rendition of the song that you grew up with on some greatest hits or best of recordings now.

I like CD vs streaming services, but dont really want to buy multiple CD's if it can be avoided.

Thanks in advance.

The album 'Money For Nothing' is a pretty good sampling. It has all the big ones: Sultans, Walk of Life, Money For Nothing, Brothers in Arms, Telegraph Road.

I have a greatest hits CD that includes some Knopfler solo recordings as well. It is called "Best of Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler". I also have a compilation called "Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits."

My favorite albums/CDs were the first four mainly because of nostalgic reasons. They are out in remastered form and they sound good. They are "Dire Straits", "Communique", "Making Movies", and "Brothers In Arms".

Greatness, and one of my favorites. Mark's music has evolved nicely over the years. I mentioned Dire Straits in a group awhile back and got a lot of deer-in-the-headlights looks. -sigh. I guess if it's not top 40, or Rap, it's not relevant to a lot of people. That's okay, rock on Mr., Knopfler
