“Oh, isn’t he a cute one!” the lady said, leaning over my stroller.

With that, my die was cast.

So I guess I wasn't aborted. But when I did enter the world the very first thing everyone saw was my ass. I've done my best to maintain that legacy.

I am not BIPOLAR. I don't even like bears.

A snow baby born in Aug

On the day I was born
The nurses all gathered 'round
And they gazed in wide wonder
At the joy they had found
The head nurse spoke up
Said "leave this one alone"
She could tell right away
That I was bad to the bone

I tease my son born a couple days before Christmas every year about his combined Birthmas but we have always made both days special for him

I grew up on Federal Hill in Providence, when it was a Mafia stronghold. "College" was street slang for prison. As in "I ain't seen Bobo these days."

"Yeah, Bobo's in college. 3 to 5 for robbery."

When I was a teenager, many of my friends were dead from heroin overdoses, or killed in Mafia violence, or in prison.

Despite some setbacks, I actually went to college. Everybody had a nickname. Mine was "Joe College," usually delivered sarcastically.

I wrote a memoir entitled "Of Blood and Love: Growing Up on Federal Hill." It is available on Amazon for $2.99 for the Kindle version, $28 for the paperback.

I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded 16 tons of number nine coal
And the straw boss said, "Well, a-bless my soul"

Thanks for this, Joe. The city I refer to was Fall River. I grew up in Warren RI. One of my neighbors had plenty of friends from Federal Hill.

I came pretty close to being born in a car. Mom was going into labor, and Dad wanted to watch the end of a movie called "Hong Kong".

They made it to the hospital, and she made it to the delivery room, but I'm not sure the casters on the gurney had stopped before it was time to go to recovery.

Having been born in late October...the 29th to be exact, I was "christened" with a nickname of Spooky. Thank goodness that didn't stick. But forever have a sweet tooth and love chocolate....damn Halloween.

I have two older sisters, Judy Carla and Carla Marie...15 and 10 years older than I am and I always got the story my parents really wanted a son. I'd like to think that since Carla was supposed to be Carl and that I wasn't just an oops surprise. By the way, my parents liked the name Carl; I'm a junior and both grandfathers who emigrated from Sweden were Carl. Carl it is!

Carl from Campello, the south side of Brockton, MA. Known for it Swedish population, but when I think of Brockton, I think of shoe manufacturing and boxers. After all, Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler came from Brockton.
