My mom and brother still live there, mom in Stone Oak and my brother in Hill Country Village. They're both older established areas with great shopping and yes, GREAT food! If I were to move back (I'm not) I'd probably settle North of Boerne, with some land. Has anyone mentioned HEB? ___________________________ He looked like an accountant or a serial-killer type. HEB is that awesome, or San Antonio sucks so bad that a grocery store is the best thing about it? Ya'll gonna have to give me some perspective, here. Is it to Texas what Publix is to Florida? ![]() My wife would be working in the southwest section of the city. Il Cattivo's comment make me nervous about that, but I guess it would mean not living in that area of town. I'll look at the congressional map. I'd prefer not to live in the city proper, if possible, but it's all on the table. As to JHE's reply, I'm more than ok with living somewhere less "urbane," and would prefer it at this point, after getting a feel for the type of people attracted to that idea of living. I want the opposite of Seattle at this point. Emails going out to TXJIM and SW_Sig shortly. ______________________________________________ Endeavoring to master the subtle art of the grapefruit spoon.

Well, my wife often laments that there's no Publix here, especially when we go back to visit family and go shopping at one. If HEB is a massive upgrade, I'll take it. ![]() ______________________________________________ Endeavoring to master the subtle art of the grapefruit spoon.

Move to San Antonio! Great food, attractions, not-austin, Texas history, you can root for the Aggies, what’s not to like?!

I was stationed there for a bit and my two USAF children lived there for several years. I always enjoyed the area. If I were to move there I would be looking southwest around Castroville (where my daughter lived) or Hondo. Friendly small town feel but easy access to the 1604 loop. Lots of shooting and hunting opportunities and if you look you will find the best BBQ and steak and TexMex anywhere. CMSGT USAF (Retired) Chief of Police (Retired)

I live just north of SA. This is the lowdown: It is very hot and humid, but people seem to thrive in that soup. There is a large population of poor Democrats so the local news caters to them even though there is a large military presence. The local politics is very left, but their police department is very good. The daily news will have at least one murder a day, with multiple shootings or murders being the norm. But, if you go northward from downtown, things get WAY WAY better. The north part of SA is the beginning of the Texas Hill Country so that is where the money is. Stone Oak is an overall area of the Loop 1604 area at US 281, and that plus the La Cantera area further west from there, are highly desirable. There are a ton of very nice neighborhoods and shopping in these areas, and all of the county areas and smaller satellite commuter cities are highly desirable. With all of the commuting, there is really bad traffic. The Stone Oak area is having a lot of highway work done on US 281, and that will alleviate a lot of headaches when it is done. I-10, which goes through La Cantera area at Loop 1604, has Fiesta Texas, and SeaWorld is not too far away. The Dominion, Boerne and Fair Oaks Ranch is just a little farther up. You aren’t too far away from the beach at Corpus Christi, and Houston and Austin aren’t that far either. The entire place is growing quickly, and new developments are popping up in the Hill Country within commuting range of SA. Yep, if you watch their local news, you get the other SA which is night and day not the reality northward. The Alamo/River Walk area is always nice, but there aren’t any other reasons for me to travel south of the upper loop of Loop 410. Retired Texas Lawman

Sorry to double post, but about HEB. I used to love our Randall’s Flagship stores in Houston, but they eventually lost their luster for some reason. I then ended up in HEB territory, and I’ve been happy. They are clean, generally well-stocked, and the employees are eager to please. However, they play canned music, and for whatever reason, I would hear the Dixie Chicks played each time I was there. Texans know that since they got political, that their music was rarely heard on the radio. With that and their dropping of My Pillow, they too appear to be getting political. Because of that, I continue to shop there, but I don’t purchase their branded items…that’ll show them!!! Retired Texas Lawman

There are many small communities around SA that are great places to live and their location makes commuting a reality. When I worked for a Texas coastal county, I was on the disaster team. HEB was great in the aftermath of hurricanes and floods. They have a relief squad that comes in 18 wheelers with on site washer/dryers as well as meals in the affected area. They give a percentage of their profits directly to charities. They have scholarship programs for employee children. Locally, when they bought old school property with a ball field, they built a brand new sports complex for the school district in another location. They used features and materials of the old school inside the store. It’s still family owned. Seems to be loyal to Texans and their communities. Very different from the big corporate supermarkets. This message has been edited. Last edited by: maxdog,

Handy Andy was the supermarket closest to where I lived. They loaded your groceries for you. We shopped at HEB as well. Is Handy Andy gone???
