Went to my local Toyota dealership to have the oil/filter change performed on my 2012 Highlander. Last year I prepaid for a few future oil/filter changes so there would be no charge to me for today's service. They noted my mileage (64,000) and mentioned the Highlander was due for its 60,000 mile service. I asked how much it would be. They quoted $799 which floored me. They offered to deduct the oil/filter portion since I'd already prepaid for the service. I declined. I cant recall paying that much for a 50k or 60k service in the past with any vehicle but perhaps auto dealerships are experiencing the same wage, parts and other expense inflation going on everywhere. | ||

800 dollar oil change? I wouldn't have been able to stop laughing till I got home. It's a Toyota, not a Ferrari. I would demand your prepaid money back. | |||

Brake fluid flush? Coolant replacement? Trans fluid flushed and replaced? I find many of the 30/60/90K service intervals to be nothing but "inspections" to see if things are still in spec. P229 | |||

Not an $800 oil/filter change, a 60,000 mile service which happens to include an oil/filter change. From what I can determine it would include: Inspect and adjust all fluid levels, Inspect wiper blades, Rotate tires, Inspect brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs, Inspect ball joints and dust covers, Inspect brake lines and hoses, Inspect drive shaft boots, Inspect engine coolant, Inspect exhaust pipes and mountings, Inspect radiator and condenser, Inspect steering gear, Inspect steering linkage and boots, Inspect rear differential oil/transfer case oil (4WD), Replace cabin air filter, Replace engine air filter, Replace engine oil and oil filter, Inspect transmission, Inspect fuel lines, Replace spark plugs. Lots of inspections, probably some topping off of fluids, replacement of the cabin and engine air filters and replace the spark plugs. | |||

Depends on what they do. 60K service used to be a pretty major (and important) one to have done, I don't know what it includes but for your Highlander if it includes brake fluid and coolant change, rear Dif fluid change, air filter, PCV valve, new spark plugs, plus various "checks" that price might not be bad. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride. | |||

That's what I'd be asking as well. What's the owner's manual say for the 60K service? If that's for spark plug replacement and you've got a V6 if they're anything like my Camry, the back 3 are a PITA to get to (I'd think those would be at 120K, not 60K). | |||

I got quoted over $1,400 at the dealership for a 90,000 mile service on my wife's Tahoe. And yes I promptly laughed in his face. It looks like that is the normal price for a 60,000 mile service. Along with inspection, rotating tires and such, the trans/t-case and axles get drained and refilled. | |||

I just paid almost seven grand to get a new camshaft, lifters, and brakes in my truck at 74K miles. Unless they are changing plugs, draining and replacing differential fluids, flushing brake lines that's way out of sorts. Not up on the Highlander, but my Tacoma calls for a bunch of things to be checked, oil and filter change, tire rotation and spark plug change. The plug change is the most expensive but it seems to me I asked at one point and it was in the $400 range. Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. If you look at the 60k recommended service, it basicly is, oil and filters and an inspection. Definitely check your power steering and transmission cooler lines (if you have them). I just had to have both replaced on my Tacoma due to corrosion. Toyota can’t make anything that doesn’t rust like hell. | |||

Probably around $250 in parts and about four hours labor. Most shops are in the $125 an hour labor rate. | |||

Cabin air filter is $15 and five minutes of your time. Including watching the YouTube of how to perform the swap. Engine air filter is at most $25 and five minutes of your time. Replacing the plugs -- not as simple. Three in the front are easy. Three in the back require removal of intake manifold. And, that adds time and a few more parts. Intake manifold gasket. Etc. But, your plugs are 120K at least, before they need to be replaced. So, no need to do this now. Tire rotation and balance is often a $80 charge at a tire store. If you don't have out of balance tires, rotation alone is possible in your driveway. Anyway, some funds required, but nothing major. As a lubricant formulator, "inspect" fluid is pointless. What can you see from looking at it? It will be dark. They will say "it needs replacing." They are wrong. Axle fluids are filled for life, in Toyota. Not in Honda. You can rest assured any inspection will bring you a dirty oil sample on a shop towel and a plea to change the fluid. Is it better for you to change the fluid? Yes. Is it required? No. No one is making money, at dealerships, so you will be facing these crazy sales techniques in the shop. Not a place I would like to go. I would look carefully at the service writer's form that you are signing. Often they are asking you to initial permission to perform a multipoint inspection and recommend services. Don't. Just get what you want. Oil change, filter change, tire rotation. Be done with it. ------- Trying to simplify my life... | |||

I can see $400-ish on a six-cylinder Highlander for the spark plugs, since the intake manifold has to be removed, and also assuming it doesn't use iridium plugs, which should be good for 100K. But I suspect there are some services being added that Toyota may not call for at that mileage. The red coolant is good for 100K (time is irrelevant). Given its age, a brake fluid flush wouldn't hurt, nor would an automatic transmission drain & fill. Unless the car is used for towing, in dusty conditions or fording rivers, you don't really need the rear diff or transfer case fluids. Sometimes dealers (and independents) like to sneak in "fuel system cleaning." Only gasoline direct injection (which your car doesn't have) benefits from this. | |||

I noticed prices like that at my local Ford dealer for x0,000 mile servicing. Their shop rate is $145 per hour. Fan of Sig, Colt, S&W, Beretta, Browning, etc, etc. | |||
