If it gets EXTREMELY cold, then a (no brim) mouton ushanka.

When it gets cold I put on a beanie. If it gets really cold I protect the back of my neck with a hoodie/scarf.

If there is more weather, I add more layers.

The only point in the brim for me is keeping sun/UV off my face/neck, which I don’t really don’t worry about too much anymore.

The Oxford dictionary definition does not support you:

Neither does Merriam-Webster:

The definitions do not distinguish between a full brim or a partial brim. I will say the word "bill" probably is limited to a ball cap, as Merriam-Webster defines that as:

"the visor (see VISOR sense 2a) of a cap or hood."

They are disqualified because they believe that brims that encircle the entire hat are stitched to the hat. This is virtually never true. The crown and the 360 degree brim of both felt and straw hats are one piece of material. Those people clearly do no know what they are talking about and are not hat people. And do you see the hats they sell? They are abominations.

And I'll go with the OED over the internet any day of the week when it comes to the meanings of words.

I have a Filson Insulated Packer hat for cold weather. I wear it hunting mostly, but also for walking around downtown on workdays. It is too hot to use walking around bird hunting here in the South. I also have a crushable Orvis felt hat and an LL Bean fleece ball cap with ear flaps.

Keep in mind... everything is relative. Our winters tend to be 40* and wet, so the Insulated Packer is slightly overkill on the warmth side. Sitting still in a 30* deer stand, it's very nice. I almost never wear a knit or fleece cap because I like a brim (or a bill!)

And of course I do have a Stormy Kromer. Made right in the Yoop.

Woolrich oilcloth safari for cool to slightly cold. Filson double mack for cold to really cold.

Can't say better than that. Not cheap, but very well made and will last forever with reasonable care.

I have a Tilley light weight wool and a heavier weight, both with tucked ear flaps. Great head wear. Hollandhats.com were great to work with for sizing, exchange/return, etc.

I have one and wore it often when the temp drops down below 10F or so. However, the last couple of years I prefer my Filson wool Elmer Fud/Floyd R Turbo cap. I like to keep my bald head toasty warm when it's cold out

For brimmed hats, I've had a Tilley Wool hat for winter wear for years--I think it is a Montana model with a 2.5" brim. Has earflaps that fold down from inside the hat if needed. Keeps my head warm. It is old enough that it was still made in Canada. Also a nylon Airflow (3.5" brim) for the summer. Love them both. Sad to say that Tilley is no longer "handcrafted with Canadian Persnicketiness" I'm afraid--but rather in China.

It's disappointing that a company that used to make a big point in in advertising "Made in Canada" is now manufactured in China.

Did not know that. I guess no more Tilley's for me. At least not w/o checking origin.

I've had a Broner crushable felt hat for many years. It's been so long I don't even remember where I got it.

It's my hunting/fishing/snowplowing/camping/whenever a ballcap won't work hat.
