I need to tape some plastic over a broke out window on a vehicle to keep the inside dry. Duct tape? Thanks guys.

Personally, I would use Gorilla Brand duct tape. That is the best duct tape I have ever used. Rain won't bother it like masking tape.

Duct tape some clear plastic on until you can get the window replaced. As long as it's not on there too long it shouldn't leave any glue residue.

It's totalled - why bother? Doubt that's affecting the scrap salvage value.

If you're worried about damaging the paint, the 3M green tape is very strong and will last for several weeks and rain storms and not damage the paint. The 401+ or 233+, not the $6 a roll green tape at HD.

I taped off a neighbor's window with thick-mill clear poly and 3M painters tape. The bodyshop guys told her it was a nice job, meaning I did not make extra work for them.

Cutting your sheet to fit makes a snug install. I wipe-down of the metal with Windex or rubbing alcohol (hard to buy at double the price right now) helps the tape stick.

Gaff tape is the next step up. Then 200mph-rated duct tape. Then chrome tape. 330X Extreme Weather HVAC Foil Tape by Nashua is 3.5mil, 14 lb-in tensile strength.

I second woodman on the Nashua foil tape. Once on, it pretty much never comes off.

Being the way I am, I would use a single strip of Gorilla tape to make the initial connection. I would then use two strips of Nashua side by side, completely covering the gorilla strip, and thus completely waterproofing it and protecting it from the elements.
I would do this on both the outside and the inside.

If I can piggyback, what’s the best clear plastic for such a job? I would like to have some in my vehicle as a precaution, as it’s likely to be raining.

Foil tape will probably hold the best.... but will be a challenge to get off...

personally for most things that need 'duct tape' I like professional riggers tape...which is a duct type tape that is actually cloth.... hotels and convention centers use this to hold wires down on carpet.

Yes. I like this fabric tape and it tears into strips if you like.

For clear, a thick 3M packaging tape. Chrome tape will really piss off the body shop guys and could increase the repair costs unless the area taped is definitely getting repainted.

We used a product called 100 mph tape on our race car...like this.

I second or third the gaffer's tape suggestion. I use it frequently for a bunch of purposes. I LOVE the no residue property of the adhesive. I keep a roll in my truck, and just about everywhere else. I also keep a roll of quality electrical tape pretty much everywhere. Neither are particularly cheap, but quality is worth paying for.

Duct tape was designed to be a method of storing a medium strength adhesive in a handy form after it leaves the factory until it can be transferred to another surface where it will become nearly impossible to remove. I detest the stuff, especially as there are numerous alternatives that work better for their different purposes.

For temporary purposes when the tape needs to hold strongly and firmly, but can be removed even after long applications with almost no left residue that is easy to remove with alcohol or lighter fluid, “gaffer” tape is an excellent product.

Where do you buy gaffer tape. Never heard of it. A local hardware store likely to have it?

Local hardware stores are less likely to have it.

“In film and television crews, the gaffer or chief lighting technician is the head electrician, responsible for the execution of the lighting plan for a production.”
They would use gaffer tape to secure wires or other items on floors or walls and they needed something that would hold securely but be removeable without leaving adhesive residues—unlike that designed-by-Satan duct tape!

It this is a rear door window..... I think that the first thing I would do is to put a large , heavy duty plastic trash bag over the top half of the door. Then , add a bunch of vertical and horizontal strips of duct tape ( any flavor) on the outside and of the trash bag.

Next, I would put myself inside the back of the car. I would slowly shut the door while keeping the trash bag tucked, tightly inside. The idea would be to use the door to help hold the trash bag in place.

JMO...
