And meanwhile Aldi has zero self-checkout machines. I predict Kroger will be out of business in two years.

Walmart has a small shelf to put things after you scanned them. I ran out of room and put my already scanned bananas back in the cart. After I got everything bagged, I went to pay and the system shut down! The clerk came over and replayed the video of the transaction. It caught me moving the bananas from the cart to the bag an$ flagged me as a shoplifter! Yes the receipt showed I’d paid. Funny thing was I could have taken the bag out the door and nobody would have done anything as they don’t pursue shoplifters. “ The work of destruction is quick, easy and exhilarating; the work of creation is slow, laborious and dull.

Stupid isn't it? One can egregiously shoplift and no one acts. But the stupid SCO machine makes an error while one is honestly trying to checkout and one is scrutinized and checked and verified. If I'm going to shoplift, I'm just walking out the door; I'm not stopping at a SCO on the way. The checkers and baggers just changed jobs to loss prevention, only their attention is only on the honest people who may make a mistake rather than the real shoplifters. It wasn't, but it is now. I've used it myself, but I have become acutely conscious of this kind of ghetto language, and we're making a change in this forum. That goes for the use of "be" as well, when the correct word in a given sentence is "is".

Kroger is huge! They won't be going out of business, but it sure could hurt them. If it hurts bad enough, they'll have the time to reverse their decision.

Kroger out of business in two years? Would you care to make a wager on that? You might as well take your money and throw it into a lake. Kroger is here to stay.

I see these cute little Kroger home delivery trucks running around. One of my employees uses that service; says its great. They deliver in evenings when she's home from her long commute. Edited to add: I asked. She says the item prices are competitive with in store pricing. I've not verified this claim independently. There's a reasonable sign up fee. ____________________

I've considered home delivery and if the bastards are bound and determined to eliminate cashiers altogether, I just may utilize their service. If they won't check me out any more, maybe they can shop for me instead. Sons o' bitches.

Krogers. Don't get me started. If they tried to create the worst grocery store chain in the history of humanity, it would be called Kroger. In my area their turf is very strong against nearby, large stores, and they don't have much to worry about. They don't carry many convenient food items, because they don't have to compete. Also, they have slowly stepped up in-store security and surveillance, and not only the cameras above SCO. They have security gates that gather information before allowing you to enter. Who knows the extent of data they are collecting. They have guys sitting at exits in front of IT stations. One time I asked about what he was doing and he clammed up. A month ago I was wheeling a cart out through the doors and at least one of the cart wheels stopped rolling. Didn't surprise me since their equipment is frequently seized or broken. I stood there bewildered trying to push the thing until the security guy rushed over and did something to it, allowing it to roll. So, they have some device installed that evidently protects against shoplifting.

I go to Costco every 4-5 weeks, went this AM just after they opened and at least one out of three shoppers were shopping for home delivery. These folks are on their cell phones for their shopping list, I only know this because I asked one. I didn't know Costco had online shopping and home delivery like the dreaded Kroger.

I've never used a self check out at the grocery store (or anywhere else as far as I can remember). I don't plan to, hopefully. My wife has a few times and is kinda neutral about it. I use Instacart because they do a good job shopping for me and deliver it right to the front door. It probably costs maybe 5-8 bucks more per trip than going to the store and doing it myself. It's convenient when I am not feeling well which, sadly, as I get older, comes around more often. Tomorrow my wife and I are making a trip to Publix (there's 4 very near my house) and I will see how many SCOs they have. Publix has always been very customer-friendly IMO. Only been to Krogers a couple of times up north on vacation, and my experience with Aldis (OK, just a single visit) was bad as they had various items of groceries and stuff spread all over the floor. Looked horrible and we've never been back. As a kid Winn Dixie and Publix were the tops, but WD is definitely a last choice for me for the last 20 or so years. I suppose if Publix should go to all SCOs, I'd have to use them sometimes, but I doubt I'll be around that long. Bob

I use the self checkout more often than not. But I'm typically only picking up a couple items. But a lot of times on produce, they don't apply those annoying little stickers and they won't scan. No telling how many times I have left an orange or lemon on top of the checkout as it's a major PITA to go through the lookup. And a lot of elderly people have a hard time with self checkout. _______________________ “The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. I have no objection to the option of self-checkout, but that's all it should ever be- an option.

Imo, self-checkout should be limited to 5 items or less, for quickies like convenient stores, not for folks with a million stuff holding up the line. Q

It's all part of the adventure... |
I generally prefer to go to a cashier, unless I’m in huge hurry and only have few items. However, Sam’s Club has the scan-as-you-go which I really do like. Even when purchasing alcohol, it’s easier and quicker than standing in line, and since Sam’s Club doesn’t bag anything (just boxes if you want them, like Costco), there’s no issue with space on the bagging shelf as you find at lots of other stores. Walmart now offers the scan-n-go, but for a fee. I know I’m paying for a Sam’s Club membership, but they include the scan-n-go in that, so for some reason it doesn’t bother me like it would if I paid for it at Walmart. I live about halfway between two Publix stores. One of them has opened a self-checkout area in addition to the attended registers. This area is staffed by one or two clerks, who are quick to jump in if there's any sort of problem. I'm not a big fan of self check-out, but it's nice to have the option, especially if I only have a few items and there's no wait for a self-service station. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

To whoever it was a few months ago who didn't believe me when I said my local Publix had a self-checkout area, I told you so. The SCO's I really don't like are the "Talky Tina" ones that keep haranguing me (including the above-mentioned Publix). "Place item in bagging area!" Not even a "please." Set an item down next to the bags: "Unexplained item in bagging area!" Trying to find the bar code on the item: "Please scan next item!" Yakety yakety yak all the time. Fuck that noise. Food City's and Walmart's are quiet by comparison. Another beef is when I scan an item, nothing apparently happens, then I try again and it rings up twice. I can't delete the duplicate myself, but have to call over someone to do it.

I really really hate self check out and have seen several stores trying to push everyone to self checkout and maybe having one normal cashier lane open. I'll use self check out for 1 or 2 items, but other than that it sucks.

Staring back from the abyss |
No way we'll ever see that around here, although they had the "curbside" service during the Covid BS. I'd never use either as I don't want someone shopping for me. I'm particular about what I buy and don't just walk up and grab the first thing I see of an item. I make sure the cans aren't dented, the onions are firm, the bananas aren't brown, the brown sugar isn't hard as a rock, the cream doesn't expire yesterday, etc.... I can see some pimpley faced teenager who doesn't give a damn just throwing a bunch of stuff in a bag and delivering it. No thanks. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.
