I have several scratches on my car hood, a couple of them deep enough not buffable.

I stopped at a couple of places today and the buff guy recommend a local body shop. Talking to him he quoted me $800 out the door to sand it and paint it. I have no idea what a reasonable price is. The scratches bug me, but they don't kill me.

I can check around for more quotes, but thought I'd ask the forum their thoughts.

800 is fair, as most of the work is in labor and skills, mixing the paint and color matching.

what car and how old is it?

Sounds very fair in todays market. I paid $750 For a Suburban hood five years ago and $1500 for a different Suburban hood and roof two years ago. Black base coat clear coat solid color.

It's a 2020 Honda CR-V. The color is a medium gray...called Titanium Gray.

You could always do a flat black rattle can on that hood, and add a few performance component decals on the front fenders. Some Cragar S/S wheels and you'd be all set. 1970s all over again.

Hadn't thought of that and don't really know anything about it. Time to research...

Keep in mind that when you paint part of a car, that part will look shiny and new compared to the rest of the car if it has faded at all. If the difference is apparent from any distance, the rest of the car might have to be painted to get a perfect match. On this newer car and with that color, you can probably get by with it. And it is certainly preferable to rusting.

Oof. I know it won’t be cheap. In 2010 I paid 1800 to paint the hood and roof of my excursion. Wish I hadn’t sold it…

My first reaction was shock that you could drive onto a body shop lot for less than $1,000, but I guess it is only paint. Inflation has hit there as well.

That paint is easy a $100+/quart.
And it's a tough match. I take the fuel cap door with me to the auto body supply place.
I just did a Nissan Rogue in the silver grey.

If you were in Georgia I'd shoot it for you if you bought the paint.

I was recently quoted by a local body shop that it would cost me $1200 to repaint the hood of my Lexus black.I thought that was high.

I have a buddy with a Ford F-150.
He got some hail damage on the hood.
He turned an estimate in with his insurance company and they cut him a check.
Just for the hell of it, he checked several salvage yards and found a used hood without a scratch, and the identical paint code.
He bought the used hood, installed it at home,
and still slid $500 cash into his pocket.
Check salvage yards first for a used hood before spending anything on paint/body work.

I paid 1800.00 to paint the roof of my Tundra three years ago. It was the highest bid but I went them because they were thorough. I had little rock chips that were beginning to rust. To do it right required the windshield be removed. They said it would break so a new one would have to be installed. They did a superb job matching the paint and they did some paintless dent repair just because.

First time I had the Jeep detailed the leading edge of the hood looked like the stars had come out at night.

So a few months ago, after spotting a stone chip with rust in it up on the roof, I had the hood re-shot and every other stone bruise he could find on the leading edges of the fenders, A-pillars, and roof touched up.

Then I had a detailer film all those stone-attracting leading edges.

Total bill, paint, detailing (in, out, and engine) plus filming the leading edges of the hood, fenders, and roof, the A-pillars and rocker panels (that last because it was inexpensive): $2700.

I don't recall what the hood, alone, came to, but $800 sounds about right.
