I was talking to a guy yesterday whose hot water heater went out. He has a "semi-smart" faucet in his house - you can set the temperature on it. Apparently, it needs pressure on both sides (hot and cold) to work right. When he lost pressure on the hot side, the cold side let loose and he couldn't turn it off. He had to bypass the water heater (connect the in directly to the out) while he replaced his water heater (it took him a day or two) so they could have water in their house. Thus the metric system did not really catch on in the States, unless you count the increasing popularity of the nine-millimeter bullet. - Dave Barry "Never go through life saying 'I should have'..." - quote from the 9/11 Boatlift Story (thanks, sdy for posting it)

I have systems that do both of these. and only the notification portion requires Internet to be working.

What if someone hacked your "Internet of things" Bidet and blasted scalding 135 degree F water up you bunghole? That would be decidedly suboptimal. And its not Skynet thats going to get smart and kill us all, its going to be Alexa's and Siri's AI love child

It’s not what they are offering, but an easier form of scanning in products to keep an active inventory could be handy... but, I’m also used to having that kind of system for work...

I wouldn't mind a shower that I could adjust in one or two degree increments with the push of a button. But I can make it the rest of my life without. _____________________ Be careful what you tolerate. You are teaching people how to treat you.

My parents had one installed in their home by a plumber who forgot to mention one critical item. It’s battery powered, and when the battery dies the water shuts off. And the battery lasts about 4 months. They got rid of it. And have been very happy.

Don't confuse automation with smart. No thanks. I remember when I had AOL and was downloading a shower, right in the middle of shampooing my hair and getting soap in my eyes, one of the kids filled their glass with ice and water from the fridge, disconnecting the plumbingmodem connection, stopped the shower download and there I was, soap in my eyes and listening to the plumbingmodem trying to negotiate and me screaming... Simpler is better. Just turn the damned handle or lift the lever. Really, how hard is it to flush a toilet?

A couple of years ago my Sister was so excited, she had me come over and see her new kitchen faucet. All you had to do was touch the faucet and it would turn on. Touch it again to turn it off. Apparently you had to keep the handle in the proper position for the temp you desired. About a year later she gave me a sob story, the faucet stopped working by touch. You can still move the handle by hand, but hey, that's not what she paid for. She said the same plumber come out, looked at it, and told her the battery that operated it was dead, and in fact the battery had corroded (Alkaline piece of shit battery) and ruined it. She was royally pissed and told the plumber he never told her it had a battery or she would have replaced regularly. Gave him the riot act and told everyone about it. Me? My house has the old fashioned stuff. Flip the switch, move the handle, adjust as needed, key to lock doors (now why would anyone want electronic door locks controlled through the dang internet???). And no, I don't want a wifi thermostat. Nor do I want cameras in the house. .

I know one of the faucet companies offers some device that monitors the water usage. You set a schedule. If water flows during the “off time”, it shuts the water off because it thinks you have a broken pipe. Seems like a little too much for me. Thermostat is wifi, but that just makes programming it easier. Since we moved to AZ, it’s rare that I need to adjust temps from anywhere. My garage door is wifi capable. It’s actually a lot more secure than one would think. The thermostat is wifi, and that just makes it easy to program. I can control it from afar, but here in AZ, that’s rarely necessary. Solar system isn’t controlled online, but it does interface, so I can see power usage, vs production, what I get from the grid and put to the grid. The new recteq bbq grill is wifi. This is great, because I can start it from anywhere, adjust temps from anywhere, monitor interior temps, as well as the probe temps. I’ll pass on having a faucet that some East Indian hacker gets to control.

Web-connected faucets? Not for me – I like simple. I can’t even abide faucets with a single dual function handle – too much stiction. When I moved into my home I installed two Grohe Atrio lavatory faucets. Two smooth quarter-turn 3-spoke handles. www.grohe.us/Single-Hole-Fauce...ROHE-CHROME-2103100A Serious about crackers

The local casinos put in urinals that automatically flushed by means of an electric eye when you left the unrinal. The maintenance staff spent WEEKS reattaching the urinals to the wall where patrons had pulled on the pipe to flush it. They also had an electric eye on the sink faucets to save water. You put your hand underneath and the water flows. You remove your hand and it shuts off. Patrons soon found a properly spaced towel would allow the faucet to continue running.

Told my dad years ago, "If you want to break something, put software into it." It's not abundantly clear what the benefit would be over a rock-simple mechanical faucet, other than requiring a better-educated (and more expensive) plumber to fix. Wait, that's *not* a benefit.....
