Gas, charcoal or pellet?

For my pellet grill, I typically give the grill a quick brush as soon as my food is done. It cleans easier when it's still hot and is good before the next use. If I cooked something that leaves grease, I leave it on high for 20 minutes to let the fat or grease burn away, then turn it off.

I change my aluminum foil on my drip tray when it turns black or if I cooked some really greasy food that will splatter on my next cook. If it has a lot of drippings, I won't try and burn it off or else it will catch fire.

I clean the ash and fire pot after I've gone through a 30 or 40 pound bag of pellets. This is also when I scrub the bottom of the grates.

After any summer holiday, I could drive the residential streets on my beat and watch the garbage cans burn, after the residents dumped hot charcoal ashes from their grills into the trash. In winter, it was fireplace ashes.
I was amazed more houses were not burned down!

I always start my grill and set all three on high.
That burns off the stuff from the last cook.
When I’m done grilling, I turn off the gas and close the lid

I did have to buy a new tube that spreads the fire from burner #1 to #2 and then #3…the little gaps got full of burnt grease. Maybe I. Should clean it once a year or so.

We had just moved into house that the inspector told us we should clean the grease out of the built in gas grill out back. I didn’t, and the first time I used it, there was a grease fire so intense it melted the plastic control knobs on the front of the grill. I got the fire under control, replaced the controls and got a local company to professional ly clean the grill.

Happened in my wood fired smoker a couple years ago. I had a couple spatchcocked chickens on. I came out of the house and I could hear the fire going through the cooking chamber it sounded like a freight train. I have a long pair of tongs so I slowly opened one of the doors and snatched those chickens out. Then I just let that fire buck. It was out after about ten minutes and the smoker was cleaned out perfectly. Best chickens I ever made!

Buddy of mine had a grease fire. It melted the gas line and became a blow torch. He lost 1/3 of his house. That’s why I like to eat out! Safer and saves us money!

There was a house fire in my neighborhood a few months ago. It started with a guy grilling in the back yard. It destroyed his house and damaged the neighbors on both sides.

Something tells me that this, or an unapproved accelerant had something to do with it.

I have a Weber charcoal grill and over the weekend, I ordered a new grill for it. I am tired of trying to clean the old one and this new one should last for as long as I need it.

Yeah, PASig kind of asked for it...

But thanks for the PSA. I hadn't yet cleaned mine at all this year as we don't grill a lot over the winter. Still, it definitely needed it!

I mostly just use Dawn/water. It's pretty easy to remove the cast iron burners and then just squirt it down with Dawn/water.

The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Should've followed the buy once, cry once mantra when I got this one. But, I liked that it has a flat griddle on the side, instead of a stovetop burner.

That happened to me at one point on a wood deck. Did not have a fire proof grilling mat. I managed to get the fire put out. I ended up with some charred planks, a new grill and a fire proof grill mat.

Ceramic grills don't rust out. Big Grin

I have a Big Green Egg knock-off from Vision Grills that I got for a few hundred bucks back in 2009ish, figuring I'd give it a try to see if I liked the newfangled kamado grill concept, and once I got my money's worth out of it after several years I'd drop the bigger money to replace it with a real BGE.

But here it is, 14 years later, still going strong, despite being left outside uncovered all year long. All I've ever had to do (besides giving the grates a quick scrape before each cook and cleaning the ash box every few months) is replace the Nomex gaskets on the lid and vent which finally wore out after about a decade, which was like a 20 minute job.

I treat my Weber kettle cooking grates as a disposable item, try to get 2-3 seasons out of them. The fire burns off the coating and exposes the raw steel which rusts pretty fast if you don't stay on top of it.

They do make all sorts of stainless steel and cast iron replacement grates too for Weber kettles but they are pretty pricey.

By floor, I mean the grill floor, it had all turned to dust & was on top of the propane tank in the lower cabinet.

Likewise. 20 years so far on a Weber Silver B. I’ve replaced an igniter and the flavorizer bars in that time.

Honestly, I think it’s the stand that might be in the worst shape of it. Plastic wheels starting to break.

I know that grill floor of mine rusted out and dropped down and over to one side of the tank open sides so then off to the decking went the grease from my hamburgers I had just finished.

Spent money for a good stainless grill Jenn Air after that. Grill safety was moved to the top of my thoughts after that.

My brother in law dumped ashes in his garbage can that was right next to his garage . He was lucky a neighbor saw it when it flared up . Melted about a 8x8 area of vinyl siding .
