Been watching a few of these recently on ADS-B Exchange.

The planes (usually a pair) originate from Whidbey Island NAS in Washington, head down to California and fly tracks similar to this off the coast. No aircraft info is available but they are flying between 900 and 1,500 ft at around 200 knots.

I don't know why I didn't think to look up the base info for Whidbey. After reading up, I'd guess these are P-8A Poseidons.

Let the music take your mind, ooh
Just release and you will find
You're gonna fly away
Glad you're goin' my way
I love it when we're cruisin' together
The music is played for love
Cruisin' is made for love
I love it when we're cruisin' together

After all, it was a Sunday afternoon, playing around in someone else's jet, using someone else's gas, and getting paid for it...
Not a bad way to make a living!

ASW training/proficiency hours?

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. -Ecclesiastes 9:11

...But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by Him shall glory, but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped. - Psalm 63:11 [excerpted]

I see those guys on ADS-B exchange, as well, and have wondered if it was some kind of training. They do vary their altitude while flying those patterns.
The fun ones to watch are the T-38s out of Alabama who are obviously student pilots. And, the KC-135s flying their refueling patterns (especially in support of the Blue Angels/T-Birds flyovers here recently).
Just watched a B-52 on there, last week, as well.

My wife and I rented a beach cabin on K-bay, which is relatively close to the flight line. You have to cross it to get to them.

All military aviation organizations have numerous staff officer slots that require flight rated officers, but don't provide any actual flight time as part of their duties. So, every quarter or so those officers all go out and clock the minimum amount of time they need, usually by flying circles around the airfield.

USMC's 1st MAW apparently had a bunch that needed night hours. CH-53's circling our end of the peninsula until well after midnight. For two nights.
