HOA wants family to remove 'Jesus' display


A religious holiday display is at the center of a dispute between two Gettysburg, Pa.-area residents and their neighborhood homeowner association.

Mark Wivell put up Christmas decorations Dec. 16 which including a display in his mulch bed that says "Jesus," as a reminder of what he says is the reason for the season: the birth of Jesus Christ.

Wivell and his wife, Lynn, were gobsmacked when they received an email a few days later from their homeowner association asking the couple to remove the display. One of their neighbors had complained the sign was offensive, an email from the association states.

"We know that Christmas was about the birth of Jesus," Wivell said. "I was quite shocked it offended somebody, but I guess in today's world I shouldn't have been."

While the homeowner association was not concerned with the content of the sign, officials felt it was not in accordance with normal Christmas decorations and asked it be taken down, the email states.

The Wivells' dispute with the association ultimately boils down to whether the display is considered a sign or a decoration.

Wivell says it is a decoration. The homemade display consists of a piece of plywood painted white and inscribed with the name "Jesus" in red, tinsel garland. He put it in his front yard at the same time as his Mickey and Minnie Mouse Christmas decorations and even draped a strand of lights over top of the wood. A small nativity scene sits beneath it.

However, the homeowner's association says the display is considered a sign. While the content of the sign relates to the holiday season, the "size, structure, and illumination of the physical sign are the accentuating factors generating the complaint," according to a second email the association sent the Wivells Dec. 18.

A message sent to the association by the The (Hanover, Pa.) Evening Sun was not immediately returned Friday.

So far, the Wivells have not been formally cited for the display, which they plan to keep up until Jan. 15 — a date set by the homeowner association for removal of holiday decorations.

"I'm looking at this as a forum to promote what Christmas is all about," Wivell said. "We wanted our neighbors to know how we feel. I don't want this to be about me though. I want it to be about the birth of Jesus."

The Links at Gettysburg golf course posted a statement on social media Friday distancing the business from The Courtyards homeowner association.

"The Links at Gettysburg Golf Course, LLC, is a completely separate, private entity from the surrounding communities and their HOA's," the post states. "The regrettable incident involving a homeowner and their respective HOA has no reflection on our business, staff or our guests."

Screw them.

Seems as if the HOA knows it's a BS complaint but is simply covering their own butts. "Your Christmas sign is against the rules, so please make sure it's down 2 weeks after Christmas or else!".

HOA administrations are inhabited by the most spineless and petty people on earth.

Then again, the are typically hired by HOA trolls and have to deal with petty, spineless homeowners, housewives / husbands who have nothing better to do than complain about peoples lawn not being cut properly or a modification to a home not being 'approved'.

Basically, it's the losers in from school who now feel they have some semblance of power and say so, yet they still lack the backbone required to not be losers.

We had a defunct HOA try to reform and invoke some semblance of control over our property - a prompt fuck you, fences, signs, and telling everyone to get the fuck off our property solved the issue.

It's Christmas.

The whole point and focus is on the birth of Jesus.

So these people are upset at Jesus, but wearing red, putting up lights, a tree perhaps, and joining in the consumer holiday product bonanza season festivities is OK? Oh my. This is why I do not like this time of year. Most people forget what the holiday is actually about. It really pisses me off to no end. I’ll do my best to think of them at both Masses this weekend or when I’m volunteering at the men’s shelter.

Someone help me. I’ve never put up lights or a tree but if someone finds a big 6-10’ LED Cross suitable for the elements and that can be broken down and stored I’ll put it in the front yard every year until I’m dead. I don’t have a HOA and I want to hurt some “feelings.”

Be patient with that neighbor. Listen to their pain and let them talk to you. Suffer their barbs with strength and love. Have faith that God's will be done.

Go to Fanucci err the HOA and agree to whatever they ask. Tell them you'll remove baby Jesus.

Then, at ten to Midnight on the 24th, you make 'em a Messiah they can't refuse.

We get a union crew in to erect the monument to our blessed Lord faster than you can say 'Hail Mary, Full of Grace'. We snap it up with our phones- Facebook, Instagram and the like.

Ten past Midnight, the crew breaks it down, disappears into the night and nobody knows nuttin'

They change the rules after you buy. I have two of them on my ass. Some of them would be in jail if the police would do their job. Should have moved 20+ years ago.
