Enshittification: A modern term coined by author Cory Doctorow to describe how digital platforms and big businesses deliberately make their products and services worse over time to maximize profits.

When my brother first said it I thought he was kidding me. Could have been used for a while but it is the first I heard of it.

It's a term (and a trend) that has been around for a while now. I first encountered it a couple decades back.

I had never heard of it before you posted, so you are not alone.

I had not heard the term either but it fills a descriptive void for half the world we live in.

It's the Peter Principle as applied to systems rather than individuals.

[sarcasm]Nice of you to clue the rest of us in.[/sarcasm]

BTW, "enshitification" has been around a long time, at least 20 years in the tech community. It originally meant something more like software rot rather than intentionally facilitating product decay. But it seems to have been eagerly adopted (the strategy, not the term) to encourage sales of newer "improved" products.

I did not intend to clue anybody in. In keeping with the theme of this thread, things that I had not heard of, I mentioned that I might have been living under a rock, never having heard about the emoji I referred to.
