We like the style but the ice maker and water dispenser have not worked in years. After two warranty replacements plus one of my own, I gave up.

I’m curious if any have a reliable ice maker in the top section? It seems like that’s just a big problem for this style.

Our Samsung French door/counter depth model is going on two and a half years, no ice maker/water issues.

It did have other issues, bottom freezer compartment was sporadic. Two attempts to repair within first month of ownership before entire fridge was replaced. Bit of a hassle, but they made it right. Bought from Costco so wasn’t too worried.

Our Samsung is 8 years old while our LG is 6 years old, both with no problems. They were the only fridges that fit the spaces they are in.

My GE is going on six years and still doing OK. Only issue is occasionally the ice sticks together and doesn't dispense. Usually just opening the door and whacking the bin breaks them up enough though.

Bosch here for 7 plus years with no issues. Neither water or ice is dispensed through the door. The water dispenser is on the inside left door jamb and the ice basket with scoop is in the bottom freezer drawer.

We're at the 2 year mark for our GE French door fridge (not one of the models with the recall). No issues so far. The new fridge replaced a GE side by side purchased new in 2003, which is still running in the basement - Ice maker and water stilled worked in that one too before we put it in the basement.

Most of the icemaker problems are the crappy nylon/plastic gears, and the surfaces of the ice cube chambers.

The surfaces where the ice forms wear leaving imperfections and result in the ice sticking and not releasing, the gears then are overwhelmed by the motor torque that moves the ice, and strip the gears. That's it for Mr. Icemaker.

Some attempts with some ice makers to use heat for a few seconds to heat metal dividers in the ice tray (chambers) help, but not for long.

Piss poor product engineering and testing.

If you design a thing, it is either "so any idiot can use it", or "spell out clear and definite protocols for periodic maintenance" with the end user accepting responsibility for follow on use.

Almost all icemakers fail on either side of that coin.

I have a Samsung. About six years old. Ice maker in left door, or behind it.

I know Samsung is hated in this board, but I’ve had two. Both outstanding with no issues.

It seems like any ice maker is doomed to break. Ice trays in a freezer seem to work well. The trick may be finding a fridge without an ice maker.

Had Samsung, it was nothing but problems, especially with the indoor ice maker/ water port.12 service calls , 10 of them were for the ice maker problems. Finally had Home Depot replace it with a GE with ice maker in the freezer drawer, never been happier. Have never had a problem again.

I hate my Bosch appliances. But over 3 years and my ice maker works. Not to say it doesn’t have issues. Not sure what the button senses when touched but it’s tricky to get it to work. Also need to hold glass directly over hole, actually touching, or it shoots ice on the floor.

But it makes ice and dispenses it still. My LG never worked after a few months.

These go to eleven.

Samsung french door w upper and lower icemakers. The only issue and it's with regularity is the upper unit jams up and the tray doesn't get the ice drop. every couple of months the unit comes out and a blow dryer needs to defrost the area.

My Frigidaire french door has been flawless.

Bought a Samsung french door model with freezer drawer and the cold drawer from Costco in 2019. The icemaker was replaced in the first 6-8 months. the freezer drawer handle mechanism is plastic, and funnily not replaceable. I had to replace the entire door. Samsung took responsibility from Costco, then dropped all responsibility when the door handle issue couldn't be fixed. They cut us a check for more than we paid for it (including 7% sakes tax) and had us remove the sticker from inside the fridge to take it out of their support system.

The repair company refused to honor the quote to replace the door because it was out of support. I had to buy the door as parts from Samsung Parts, and do it myself. That was fine, except the shipping was higher than the Samsung authorized repair company's service call charge.

The auger tray on the ice maker is broken but still functional. the ice maker itself overflows and freezes up solid so I have to break out the hair dryer periodically. the forced defrost mode is not strong enough to actually defrost it.

I want to move it to the garage and buy an LG. My wife does not. I'm usually of the fix it and move on philosophy where she is of the replace it school, except on th is particular item.

I had to replace the ice maker a couple times in our old fridge. Its not very hard. Parts are easy to find online and not very expensive.

On a side note. I highly recommend replacing that cheap plastic hose that goes from the fridge to the faucet in the wall. They get brittle over time and break. We woke up one morning with our hard wood floors in the kitchen covered in water. It had been running long enough that water was dripping on the cars in the garage below. We replaced the line with a braided stainless line with some kind of emergency shut off if it gets a high pressure surge of water.
