To digress a bit...there are some purebred cats that are quite valuable (as well as purebred dogs). We paid $1600 about 6 years ago for a purebred but neutered Maine Coon. I'm a cheap bastard but this is our 3rd Maine Coon, and we think the world of him.

There is an old phone scam where the caller is charged for dialing a number.

It began as a way to donate money to a cause like "We are the World" without the organization having to pay people to answer the phone.

Eventually, scammers realized they could robo-call people with one ring and people would call back to see who it was. No answer when they called back, but on their phone bill was a $2 charge that most people never took the time to investigate.

Call the number in the flyer, let us know if your phone bill has an extra charge next month?

We can never really know what someone's personal circumstances are and why they value a pet. It is easy to second guess without knowing the person and circumstances.

Maybe go out and search for that and make $5000.

We live in a heavily wooded complex outside the city. Several large owls in the area, and at least one pair of hawks. Hate to see the neighbor letting their cat out to roam around.

Oldest daughter is such a softie if she sees any kind of critter in the house - including spiders - she scoops them up in a cup and relocates them outside.

If they make five grand before lunch, why would I give a fist full of shit what they choose to do with it ?

I've wondered what happens when such a reward is offered but the owner never intended to pay out. Does the finder keep the pet? Does some sort of hostage swap occur where the finder keeps the pet at an undisclosed location until the reward money with unmarked, unsequential denominations of $20, $50 and $100 bills is dropped into the garbage bin at 3rd and Figueroa? Or does the pet get dropped off in the middle of the wilderness likely to never be found again?


I don't have that problem. My Jack Russell is a well behaved, obedient dog... with me. I've left him with others and the consensus is that he's a little terrorist. If he ever ran away all I'd have to do is post that when the finder is tired of the barking, stubbornness and numerous ways he can subvert authority to give me a call and I'll swing by to take him away.

Fair enough. But I would like to point out something. My comments here are just my opinion and that only. Doesn't mean I'm right or wrong. Not trying to "gainsay" anyone. In retrospect, I could have used softer words and maybe should have done so. If someone is truly offended, then my apologies to them.

I might also point out that the wife and I have had cats off and on for over 45 years. I'm sitting here looking at two black cats as I type. We rescued them from a neighbor who told his wife they were to be disposed of by the weekend if she didn't find them a home. Hell, I like these cats and are glad they are here.

Would I spend 8 grand on replacing a hip on one of them? Hell no.

There are many people, probably even more so on this forum, who consider their pets to be family members. Some people don't have children, maybe the kids moved out and they're empty nesters. Or maybe some can't have children.
