I was reading a novel in which the protagonist, a Brit, was lusting for kippers for his breakfast. I knew that kippers were smoked fish, but checked the web for more details:

“What are kippers?
A kipper is a fat herring (caught in season) that has been split through the back, gutted, opened flat, salted or brined to reduce its water content and then cold smoked. This is a process that cures and dries the fish while imparting a smoky flavour, without exposing it to heat. …”
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/glossary/kipper-glossary#

I was interested since I generally like smoked meats and fish (TJ’s tinned smoked trout, for example). But I’ve never seen kippers offered for sale here in San Diego. Furthermore, it appears that they need a good deal of preparation. See this 8:17 YouTube video:
https://youtu.be/6G1-iSC7HE8?si=0wnKsvBhQJwzqi4v

But I subsequently discovered “Kipper Snacks”, which are tinned smoked herring filets. All of the prep work described in the YouTube video has already been completed.

Since King Oscar “Tiny Tots” are my favorite tinned sardines, I bought the King Oscar brand of Kipper Snacks at one of my grocery stores. They’re available on Amazon too.

Very tasty, and negligible prep required. I open one end of the tin a bit, put it in my kitchen sink, crack down, and give it half an hour to let the liquid fully drain out.

Then eat as you will. I put mine on a single slice of Mestemacher Pumpernickel to make an open face sandwich. It’s just the right size and shape for that. I toast the Pumpernickel to make the sandwich rigid enough to hand hold. A bit of horseradish sauce too. I buy the Mestemacher Pumpernickel at my local Whole Foods, but it’s also available from Amazon:

Very tasty, and nutritious too. Herrings are low on the food chain, so there’s little accumulation of heavy metals. And there’s almost nothing in the pumpernickel except whole grain rye and water. Lots of flavor and fiber, few calories.

Serious about crackers.

Kippers or Kipper Snacks?

And what happened to your avatar?

King Oscar, same as you mentioned. Also good, the seafood department at the local grocery supermarket has packaged smoked trout -- I like any kind of smoked fish for breakfast, scrambled eggs (mixed with sautéed onion), and a bialy. Smoked salmon, trout, sturgeon, whitefish, all good.

Avatar? I don't understand the question. Last time it was changed was many years ago, when I realized that the Attitude Indicator showed a slight turn to the left, so I asked the Monkey, who is hosting my avatar on his server, to flip it. For the past several years it has been indicating a slight turn to the right. More better. OOPS! Politics in a non-political thread, but maybe it will be allowed in this context.

Your avatar is missing in this thread. At least for me. Viewing with Safari on my iPhone.

ETA: It just reappeared. Prior to that it was a tiny green square with a white question mark.

Yeah, that happens every now and again, except I see a blue square with a question mark, not a green one.

Just guessing here, but it might mean that SIGforum misses a connection with the system that hosts my avatar. Monkey might be able to give a better answer, he knows a lot more about networking than I do, and he is hosting my avatar.
