The late, great Paul Harvey encouraged people to use a little salute instead of a handshake during cold and flu season.

During 'Da Bola' panic, people in some African countries adopted the elbow bump. Seems appropriate now.

To save others the search and wincing moment. Well the first anyway.

And as recently as the 1950s, Scott writes, it wasn’t uncommon for an aboriginal tribe in Australia to say hello via genital grabbing. Aussie anthropologist M.J. We have been shaking hands for hundreds of years. Frankly, I see no good reason for stopping it. If one has a functioning immune system, one won't typically get sick from doing it. Hand washing should handle the problem (but do try to be a little subtle about it--don't shake hands with someone and immediately rip out an antibacterial wipe and cleanse your hands in front of him).

I understand that some folks prefer not to shake hands. When confronted with one, I accede to their desire and simply nod and smile.

I am not a germophobe--my immune system was well exercised in my youth and appears to still be working well. I take some precautions and don't give diseases much thought.

I grew up in a household with a subscription to National Geographic and ALL the issues were saved...as a kid, I remember my siblings and I got immense pleasure and laughter when learning that there was some remote African tribe that, when members of the tribe would encounter each other on the trail they would shit in their hands and toss it at the other members as a greeting.

Agreed, I'll stick to the traditional, if antiquated, greeting of the handshake, and take my chances...hell, nothing wrong with exposing healthy immune systems to a few germs, if for no other reason than to condition them.
