I own a dark blue blazer and 3 or 4 pair of dress pants. That combination worked well for me when interviewing. I made me look different but well dressed for the second and third interviews.

Navy blue or dark charcoal gray can be worn anywhere a suit is required, from wedding to funeral to job interview to court to church, with navy blue having the slight edge for me.

Black or a lighter gray are somewhat less versatile, and while one might be able to get away with wearing them just about anywhere, they'll look a bit out of place in some situations.

Any other colors are extremely situational.

It seems that a nice sports coat, hounds tooth maybe, with a suitable dress shirt and tie have become appropriate for almost any occasion. If you need a "real" suit, dark blue or gray will be what you want. If you have to attend a real suit occasion even if only annually, you should probably have both. People remember.

These days, black is too morbid, even for funerals, wear the gray.

I am lucky to have found an independent tailor near me who has a good selection of quality items, and who is a stickler for making the fit perfect. Fit is at least as important as the quality of cloth and stitching in how you look overall.

Also important, after each time you wear it, get your good suit professionally cleaned immediately, and hang it in a protective cover so it is ready for that unexpected event when you need it.

I only own one suit, I bought it for my son’s wedding. It’s dark blue.

I’ve had a navy blue blazer long enough that I’ve replaced it once. Orvis, and I recommend it.

Navy or Gray. Both can be paired with black or brown shoes/belt.

Agree with Rogue, Navy holds the edge over the two.

Maybe I missed it, but it sounds like you plan on wearing plain white for a dress shirt. Nothing wrong with that, but some suit colors are more forgiving of what they are paired with.

Best info is probably already posted, but we still don't know what suit colors look best on you.

If everything else is equal, how you feel in it will add or subtract from how it looks.

The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Dark charcoal. Either plain(preferred) or with a muted narrow pinstripe. Extremely versatile and works for all occasions.

Charcoal for me

Although, I question the need for one as they're becoming less and less common for even funerals and weddings. For example, I donned my charcoal suit after the drunk driver killed my niece and there were only 3 of us wearing a suit at the packed funeral (the pastor officiating, niece's father, and me). The number of guys wearing jeans and sweatshirts was astonishing as well as the "ladies" wearing yoga pants. My Dad goes to quite a few funerals per year and had warned me about the casualness.

I have one suit and it’s dark gray. I just change up the dress shirt and tie combo.

I know this may be very old fashioned, but a black suit is extremely limited.

I know the "color" rules change, if your skin is pigmented - but I don't think the "black only for funerals" ever changes.

I like a charcoal gray. Dark blue is also just fine. Black is too much, as far as I am concerned, and makes me look like a fat mafaosi.

Either blue or charcoal can be "lightened up" with colored shirts or flashy ties.

Black, I still look like a fat mafaosi.
