Service stations don't put the sharpest tool on the gas pump island.

I lived in NJ when I was a kid. I can recall dozens of us from my HS class ALL working for gas stations, pumping gas for some running around money.

So watch it with that "sharpest tool" stuff.

It is what it is....and it provides work for a lot of people.

I pumped gas too, when it was twenty-five cents a gallon. When I was expected to look under the hood and check the oil. Sometimes check the air in tires for customer who bought only a dollar worth of gas.

I moved up into repairing cars at the service station, then went to work for a Volkswagen dealership. Then to become a VW service writer then service manager.

I worked with guys who couldn't find a VW aircooled motor dip stick without help. Many remained at that level of competence and I sometimes come in contact with one.

Why would I want to pump my own gas?

So I don't have to hand some monkey my cc.

So I don't have to hand some monkey cash who can't make change

So some monkey dosen't spill gas all over my paint (and chip the shit out of it putting the nozzle in. Or forget to put the cap on.)

***So I avoid all of the above and I know it gets done right***

The days of the Texaco crew are over. I'll pump, thank you.

Why would you want to cut your own meat and feed yourself?

Why would you want to change the station on your TV yourself?

Why would you want to wipe your own butt after your potty break?

Big Grin

It's what responsible adults do.

(It's bizarre and inconceivable to me that people would be in favor of forcibly requiring some numbnut to fill your own gas tank. Bizarre and incredibly dumb. If the market is there for gas stations to employ people to pump gas then fine - otherwise, bizarre)

When self-service started in CA, Union 76 stations or some of them were still offering gast station attendants. I pulled into one because Union 76 also were the last ones who offered real high octane leaded fuel.

I saw the guy topping off my tank and spilling some gas on the side.

Since then, I always get rattled when we drive infrequently into Oregon and someone kept stopping me from filling up my own gas.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

While visiting my mom over Christmas I learned she has never pumped her own gas. Ever. She grew up on the south shore. She lamented to me that there was only one station left that she could go to. I asked why. She said they were the only remaining station that pumped gas. I was flabbergasted. Just under 75 and never pumped gas. I remember my uncle teaching me when I was 12. Unfortunately she will most likely not be driving too much longer, but to have never pumped gas? I was astounded. Talking to my sister she reminded me of how mom used to always go to the Mobil station in town that had full service when we were young. Ran over the air line to ring the bell and everything. I never knew or I would have tought her after my dad passed. I wish I knew that so I could have shown her how easy it is.

I knew about NJ, never knew about Oregon. I was heading up to Yakima, WA from 29 Palms, CA and stopped in Oregon for fuel. Little podunk gas station. I hopped out of the truck, grabbed the nozzle and flipped the lever, and thought the old guy in the quick mart was going to have a heart attack! He came out of that store quick fast and in a hurry!

Lol he filled it up, explained the laws, and from then on I made sure I had enough fuel to make it through Oregon.

Not to mention having to wait for one gas attendant to run around dealing with four or more cars at once. What a waste of my freakin' time. It's super annoying when I'm in a rush and the tank is full, but I have to sit there and wait for the guy to finally get back around to me to take my credit card.

And then there are the times that the attendant puts the wrong gas in your car. I had one pump 87 octane into my supercharged Lightning when I specifically stated premium. From then on I always watched closely that they pumped what I asked. More than once after that I had to get out of the car and stop the pump because he was pumping regular.

My brother in law had one moron put gasoline into his diesel pickup truck. He caught him doing it as he was walking back to his truck after going inside the little store there. And his truck was still running! He immediately shut it off and called over the manager. The gas station ended up paying for the gas to be pumped back out as well as pulling and clearing all the fuel lines.

Anyway, yeah, being able to pump my own gas was one of the many great improvements I experienced when I finally got out of Jersey.

I frequent Shell, 76, and Chevron. I prefer them to fill me up. The pump guys around here are all good. No problems ever for me. I usually get out anyway and yak with them or clean the windscreen. Or go in and grab a munchie and spring water. I do lock the Subaru to keep safe the 225a.....

I am 61 yrs old and have always pumped my own gas. For people that want someone else to do it for more money per gallon, fine let them. My Mom was 88 years old when she died and had been pumping her own for years. It ain't rocket science.

I live in PA, grew up in NJ. Lancaster County is a tourist attraction for many, people from NJ included.

I was parked off to the side at a station one day.
It was entertaining to watch two college age girls pull into a gas station one summer day and wait for the attendant to come out to pump their gas. NJ plates on the car. Since we have very few full service stations, it never happened. Then they tried to figure out the pump. While nothing really dangerous happened, it was entertaining to watch them come upon their “Ah ha” moment.
