Bill, if you accept Zelle, PayPal Friends & Family, or Venmo (maybe Cash App too? I've never used it), those are some other alternatives where members could send you money without incurring any fees.

I realize that, but here's the rub... most of the stuff I've been having done lately requires repeat visits with the doctor's office for that particular issue. I'm seeing 5 different specialist all at the same time now, and followups and procedures will get cancelled if I don't keep up with the bills incurred. I know this because I quit paying some a few years ago when things got tough and I eventually had to find a new doctor, and I've gone through hell trying to set several of these up and have no plans to lose them!

Federally, it looks like just before Biden left office, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) finalized a rule that barred the inclusion of medical debt in credit scores or from appearing on credit reports. However a federal court vacated the rule in July '25.. $500 and above still can appear on credit report.

State specific, it looks like 11 states have legislation against reporting medical debt on credit report, but the OP's state, Alabama, is not one of them.
