So I was walking to the gas station and found a wad of cash today. Went inside and advised the manager on duty that I had found said stash and advised him that if anyone came in looking like a future cardiac patient, I would be hanging around a bit at the pump I was filling up at. Filled up and went back inside to get a bottle of caffene and a piece of that Kit-Kat bar. Hung around for a bit where I found it and a guy was staring at me. Didn't know if it was the potential unluckiest guy in the lot, he drove off as I was walking toward his general area (that was on the way back to the pumps). Lady walked past my truck but appeared calm. Not hers? For about ten minutes I watched as each car in the lot that was there when I found it had driven off. Idled at the pump a bit longer to see if any stressed out motorist that had peed themselves showed up. Nothing. I eventually left. I just recently checked the local Sheriff's Facebook page to see if anyone had reported some missing bills. Nothing. If any member (who didn't sign up after I post this) replies with a description, amount, time and location, I will give it back to them at a time that would be convenient for both of us. At what point would it be adequate for me to consider it 'mine'?

What about footage from surveillance cameras that may be outside?

Hold a while, it is likely a drug drop. _________________ This space left intentionally blank.

I would give it a few days and see. Surveilance footage should be helpful. Drug drop is unlikely. Was it in a roll with a rubber band?

you have done the right things...only you will know when the time is right to claim the cash.

You checked the sheriff's Facebook page? I mean this as respectfully as possible, but are you saying that just to make yourself feel better about keeping it? You can't honestly believe that is the same as turning it in to the sheriff's office, or seeing if the business has surveillance. When I think "wad" of cash it implies several hundred if not thousands of dollars. You should turn it in. Depending on your state's law, you may be entitled to it after a period of time if it's not claimed. But you should still turn it in. I would hope if I dropped a wad of cash someone would turn it in.

Turn it in to the police. (I assume they still do that.) If nobody claims it in X amount of time then you can keep it. You can also place a "lost & found" ad in the newspaper. If the money was part of a drug deal gone wrong it could be dangerous, but it could be someone's life savings or something, kind of like that Andy Griffith Show episode where Opie found $50. It may also be some form of larceny to keep it without trying to find the owner.

Thought about a drop. Less than $200 in loose bills folded once. Thinking it was too many folks walking to and fro in front of the store. I did watch to see if anybody followed me on the way home in case they were talking to the manager as I left. Only a silver Acura TL and they turned in less than half a mile. Planned to go back to the store tomorrow to see if anyone had spoke to the manager. I'm thinking that whoever had lost it would really like to have it back. Weather or not I could use it (I paid my property taxes yesterday) isn't an issue.
Yes. The local Sheriff's Facebook page is nothing short of spectacular and very current. You may have already been there or read about it more than once.

Less than $200? Dang, I was thinking this could be the sequel to No Country for Old Men.

I wouldn't turn it in to the authorities. Why would you do that? What I would do is contact the authorities, tell them you found something (don't be too specific), and give them your information. If somebody reports it missing they can put them in touch with you directly. I would also keep an eye on craigslist/facebook type posts which may have been made by the owner who is looking. You've already notified the business, so outside of that there's not much else you can do. I once encountered a man that had about $200,000 rolling around loose in his truck. I could easily see him dropping a roll of it out the door and never noticing it was gone.

I am a personal friend with the family that found and turned in a million dollars a few months ago in Virginia. His views were it was not his to keep and he did get a modest reward.

Put it on your facebook page along with your name and number. Make them guess the correct amount. NO just kidding. Oh, if you keep it be sure and claim it on your tax return!

Me and my little brother found four hundred dollars in the parking lot of a gas station when we were ten or so. We told our dad, he went to the store and told them he had found some money and to call him if someone came in to claim it...they never did. Dad gave the money to a local charity. When I was a sailor (freshly divorced and broke as shit) I found $400 cash in a wallet, I turned it in to the cops because I knew the visitor would eventually find his wallet missing and call, and it was the right thing to do..I could have used that money but it wasn’t mine. When I was a cop I found some cash by a register, I told the cashier to call me if someone came in to claim it. I then made a report and turned it in..eventually it was given to the local school board, probably a year or more later. I wouldn’t turn it into the police, I’d let the place know you found some money and wait...after a few days I’d donate it to a good cause...your church, local food bank, if not it will sit at the PD until the cows come home and a judge makes a decision about it. A twenty dollar bill is found in the high school hallway. Six out of ten put it in their pocket and tell no one. Three turn it in to the office. It is the next one I am concerned about. He turns it in to the prinicipal because it is only 20 bucks and the prinicipal will then think he is honest. That sort of thing could prove helpful down the road with the principal. Classic sociopathic behavior in its early stages.
