Semisonic Speaks Out Against White House for Using ‘Closing Time' in Deportation Video: ‘They Have Missed the Point Entirely'

Semisonic is speaking out against the White House after the release of a deportation video using their 1998 hit "Closing Time."

The song, which was written about the birth of lead singer Dan Wilson's daughter and has over the years become an end-of-the-night anthem, is featured in a clip posted to the White House's socials depicting a man in handcuffs being deported by border patrol. As other men are loaded onto a plane, a clip of the song plays with Wilson singing, "You don't have to go home but you can't stay here."

Semisonic blasted the White House for using the song without their approval, and for misinterpreting the message behind it. In a statement shared with Variety and initially reported by Rolling Stone, the band said, "We did not authorize or condone the White House's use of our song in any way. And no, they didn't ask. The song is about joy and possibilities and hope, and they have missed the point entirely..."

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on who is missing the point, 'cause I don't see how joy, possibilities, and especially hope don't fit with how the Border Patrol used the song.

So the White House misses the point of the song he says he wrote about the birth of his daughter, but the bars that use the song to close their places down every night interpret the song correctly.

Then Dan Wilson likens his newborn daughter to a bar fly at 2am?
