Cool Looking but EV only, means they are not for serious off road use, where the heck would you charge it after a day at MOAB, or climbing some remote trails
solar panels aren't going to save your butt at the top of some mountain. Should be a hybrid with a 3 or 4 cyl gas or diesel and electric assist....

2028 Scout Terra Pickup And Traveler SUV Revealed As Retro EVs With Optional Gas Range Extenders For Under $60,000

The Volkswagen Group made waves back in 2022 when it announced it would be reviving the Scout nameplate for a new brand of American-built fully electric trucks and SUVs, but we hadn’t gotten much concrete info about the upcoming Scouts beyond some teasers and learnings gleaned from talking with the CEO. Until now, that is. Enter the new Scout Terra pickup and Traveler SUV — both names taken from original International Harvester models — which were just revealed at a sprawling estate outside Nashville. Technically these are just concept vehicles, but Scout representatives promise they’re quite close to the production models that will launch in 2027.

We don’t have many powertrain details yet, but the electric Scouts will have an electric motor at each axle and an 800-volt battery pack of unknown size. The brand is targeting a maximum torque figure of 1,000 pound-feet, which will send the trucks from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 3.5 seconds and allow them to climb 100-percent grades. No horsepower figures were given, and there will surely be lower-powered versions offered. Charging will be accomplished with an NACS port, and the Scouts will have 350-kW fast-charging and bi-directional charging capabilities. Maximum range will be a Scout-estimated 350 miles.

Those look sharp! Rivian and others (but Rivian especially!) could take a lesson here and ought to notice the pleasant aesthetic (beauty?) conveyed by a simple & understated styling. Just sayin' Wink

Nice to see the Scout again, but as an EV, as Alan says, “No thanks.”

Back in 1980 when I graduated college, I came very close to buying a diesel Scout. I ended up with a Bronco. The old Scout would have been a classic to own now!

My initial impression was one of elation until I realized it was all electric.

Nope.

Good luck Scout.

My county nearly doubled charging stations when the city installed a single access station recently. I'll pass.

^^ Yeah, but EVERY time I see a Rivian I'm overwhelmed with that Hideously UGLY Front End (Grill?)/Signature LED Lighting! In that respect these new VAG Scouts bear ZERO resemblance to the Rivian!

Here a pic of the freakishly hideous Rivian R1S in a similar color to prove the point...

I'll agree that the Scout looks better, but I don't mind the Rivian front end either.

“allow them to climb 100-percent grades”

This is a bit difficult for me to believe.

30 years ago I bought a couple of used “corn-binder” Terra pickups with V-8s. They were very handy and capable vehicles, and simple to repair. And cheap. Nobody wanted them.

Owned a 1974 Scout II 6 cyl. purchased new for just over $3,200. A great farm vehicle that doubled as a Colorado mountain road vacation unit. Would like a new one but not EV, lack of charging a significant impediment.

I 100% agree and I’ve been dailying an EV toaster for almost 11 years straight now. Performance applications they do NOT work. My motorcycle dealer lets me take any all new EV sportbike or regular motorcycle out for a test ride. I get a key or fob and told be back in an hour. So I’ll go out, hit a few corners, then have to 180 back to the dealership because performance riding, driving, whatever, kills MPG, or range in this case. Dealer would ask for my feedback and every time I say “Would work as a commuter only but who wants to commute in this shit and die?” Our traffic is abysmal here.

Same goes for a sportscar, off road machine, etc. Really you gonna actually use it for what it was designed for? Ok you’ll be stuck on some mountain somewhere, completely out of kwh. EV’s make for excellent local commuter vehicles to get to work, run errands, drive around your metro, but outside of that, you want gasoline.

What’s funny is idiots will buy these because of the look alone. Most vehicle purchases, 90%, are bought for image purposes only, or some capability the vehicle has, that the owner will never even use or utilize. So the vehicle market as a whole is largely fake. “Oh it can do this!” Yeah and you’ll never do that Billy so shut up about it.

Mildly optioned, LMAO $60k. Yeah right. Seen this movie. $70k, 80k, etc. I don’t believe anything they say until it’s on the lot.

They say one option comes with an internal cumbustion engine to give extended range but it's used as a generator and not directly part of the drivetrain.

Don't worry though. Somebody will swap in an LS or a Hemi eventually.

Guess you missed the part of the gas generator as an option to extend mileage.

I LOVE IT!!! Think of it as the Pistol brace to the SBR portion of the NFA.

I look at it as a bit of an FU. It’s an EV but still highly utilizes an ICE that does not factor into gas mileage and emission standards. At least for now till EPA changes the rules.

Not sure exactly what ICE they will be using for these but the Ram 1500 REV is doing the same thing and using a V6 Pentastar engine.

I am looking forward to these.

I've long thought the Chevrolet Volt was the right idea.
An EV with a generator under the hood.

Mazda did it too with the MX-30 which IIRC had a rotary for a generator.

Isn’t 100% grade = 45*?

100 x rise/run

That could be possible.
