If I were the OP, I'd find the nearest Social Security office, make an appointment, and go there with all you ID documents. They really can't claim your dead when your sitting across the desk from them with your photo DL and passport.

Ha! That's what you think....

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I'm a tad confused as to why they would send mail to a dead person, or at least someone they thought was dead, telling them they're no longer covered. Confused

Thank you, I have trying to remember that. Mark Twain if I recall right.
No, I'm pretty sure that it was Sam Clemens.

Jesus... How Exactly Do You Prove You’re Alive If You’re Accidentally Declared Dead?

Perhaps start here? What should I do if I am incorrectly listed as deceased in Social Security’s records?

Btw: I'm not usually one to cry "Lawsuit! Release the lawyers!", but, in this case, if this did originate with the hospital, I have to wonder if a lawsuit for damages would be in order?

Doubtful. Costly and time consuming. TV story would be more satisfying. Funeral homes usually take care of notifying social security, not the hospital.

I was prepared to do that but the offices are not open for face to face service, per the SS website.

Hopefully you have life insurance .... who ever your beneficiary is should be checking their mail.

i once was throwing away one of those computer generated tear the corners and unfold junk mails when I thought the return address looked familiar and so I opened it before tossing... it was a check for about $3,000 for an insurance claim.

I agree with the guy above who suggested you consider both sides of this. You might be better off dead. Catchy name for a movie, too. File your own death notice. Put in all kinds of great stuff you've done. You could have fun with this.

When I was a youngster in College I rented a Duplex off campus.

I came home one day and the electric didn't work. I called the electric company to report the outage and they told me I was dead! NO I'M NOT!!!

Went to get a drink of water, no water. Called them, same story, said I was dead.

At least the phone still worked.

Long story made short, the electric and water would not come out and restore service, I had to go down IN PERSON to their offices with all the ID I had. When they agreed to restore service we discussed what happened, and I pursuaded each to put a note in my account that no changes were ever to be made to my account service without me coming in person to do so, and to never allow phone calls to prevent this ever happening again.

It was a giant pain in the ass.

I finally found out it was a fraternity brother who thought it would be hilarious to pull that stunt, but never found out which one. That really pissed me off even more.

A call to your Reps/Senators is in order. You won't get them directly but starting the conversation with their assistant by explaining how you died should get them interested. Also a call to each Agency head alerting them that the issue has been elevated helps the address it without being "ambushed," which doesn't help at all.

Having multiple Fed Senators/Reps and also State Senators/Reps gets them aligned and knowledgeable in force. You want all the allies you can get.

"Hi, I'm gjgalligan and I'm calling from the dead ..." The use of humor gets them on your side quickly. It plays well and they like working with folks who aren't being intense.

There is a bureaucracy out there who's slow and entrenched process requires some push to correct things.
