Posted a guitar on local FB page, with trade options include “hunting equipment”

College kid offered me an SkS, we worked it out and his dad met me to inspect the guitar, bringing the rifle with him. Seemed like a reasonable fellow when we met.

He pulled the rifle into out of a case and handed it to me, since we were in a Cabelas parking lot I gave it a quick once over and handed it back to him

After playing the guitar for a couple minutes, we sealed the deal.

He forked over the rifle, keeping his case
I had an empty case with me for that very reAson
Laid it in the case which was on back seat of my truck and thought, hey I didn’t cycle the bolt, dry fire it or anything, just a visual inspection

Cycled the bolt and out pops a round, dropped the mag and 9 more fell out, Fother Mucker!
We were swinging this thing all around a parking lot in the middle of the day. The safety was on at least

ALWAYS CLEAR WHEN YOU ARE HANDED A FIREARM ALWAYS CLEAR WHEN YOU HAND BACK.

I never hand somebody a firearm I don’t have in a clear position.

Take this a pucker factor learning moment

Not to pile on, but ALWAYS check a weapon when handling it. Luckily nothing happened, but that could have been bad.

Thanks for posting. It is a good reminder for us all. Lack of knowledge does not typically result in accidents...it's complacency and we are all susceptable.

I can’t remember the last time I didn’t clear a weapon when handed one.
I tend to do it a couple times actually. I’ve laid a gun on he table, turned around, and picked it up to clear it again. Friends have mentioned that I clear them compulsively.

Don’t know what threw me off my game. But that’s the point I guess, never let your guard down.

What threw you off was the stress and uncertainty of meeting these strangers in a parking lot doing business plus some social anxiety of others that may be looking I imagine. It was enough to throw you out of your typical habits. Your mind was processing a bunch more stuff than when casually handling a gun at home, or with friends, or in a store or range.

I probably do overkill. As I help out a friend with a gun shop whenever I show a gun whether it be in the rack or cabinet or take one in for repair work I check it as it enters my hands.

If I have shown that gun even five minutes earlier to a prospective buyer I still check it before it leaves my hands.

I’ve been taking my oldest son shooting a lot, and even my youngest. I am very strict about the 4 basic rules, but that doesn’t cover when someone hands you a firearm. So I made up my own.

When someone hands you a firearm:
1. CHECK TO MAKE SURE IT IS UNLOADED.
2. CHECK AGAIN TO MAKE SURE IT IS UNLOADED.

And even after he does that, and hands it to a friend, I have his friend do the exact same thing.

Thanks for the reminder. When you are around something enough, you do become complacent. I’ve heard of flight instructors and mechanics walking into spinning propellors. A Navy Sailor just did that last week.

I apologize now...

Probably because you were outside, in a public parking lot, and feeling exposed. As a result you were self conscious and rushed. It's certainly not an excuse, but it might be what threw you off your game. Anyway that's just my guess.

But look on the bright side. Free ammo!

Remember Cooper's Four Rules? You - both of you - did violate at least one, possibly two or even three of them. But because you followed Rule Three (not putting your finger on the trigger), no harm was done. Something often misunderstood about the four rules is that each is a layer of safety and it takes violation of at least two to cause harm. http://corneredcat.com/article...fety/the-four-rules/ Also curious if this rifle has a bolt lock-back.

I had a client show me his FN SCAR in a parking lot with my kids and he handed me a hot weapon. I asked him if it was clear, its not something I have held before, so the action is different than an AR which I was used to. simple enough, drop mag and pull bolt, out pops a round and a full mag.

pucker factor for sure.
