I use liquid body soap, shaving in shower allows the beard to soften a bit and I lather up first on the face giving it time to soften.

I read that "no shaving cream" thing some number of years ago. I tried it, to save money and time. It didn't work for me, and I gave it time. Plus, my skin is plenty oily as it is. I don't need extra oil.


I use real soap and a bush. Much better than canned foam. Either is better than water alone or even oil.
