We were discussing the suggestion that he went rogue, did give a rat's ass, burned all bridges, etc. If the producers of the show were aware of what he was going to do, planned screen shots on those targeted, they were in on it and he didn't go rogue.

They don't have to plan those shots. They have a dozen cameras in there, a seating chart and team that can get any given face on screnn in less than two seconds.

But I doubt that they knew the whole script. When you hire Gervais, you know you are going to get snark and edgy to harsh social commentary.

I know it seems clever and in-the-know to claim it was all some plot to boost ratings. I just don't buy it. Sure, they could anticipate the general tone, but not the specific content.
I'm with you, jhe. The only thing I wonder about is the folks who ran his teleprompter. Did they share what they knew with anyone in charge of the show? Would there have been time for them to?

I doubt he was going off the teleprompter. Stand up comedians pretty much have to be able to hold their routine in their head, and Ricky Gervais isn't new to that.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Way to go Ricky. That's how you hand libs their rear end.

I assure you, he is a lib. But he's a freedom of speech supporting lib who apparently sees hypocrisy and doesn't mind pointing it out.

He was hired knowing all along he was going to take a piss on Hollywood, and he did. Its the only reason why I watched.

Every 'celebrity' on the planet needs to read and heed this:

For those who were speculating that this was a setup and he would be back as host next year. Nope - they already announced the new hosts:

“Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.”

UPDATE 2022. They are not even bothering to televise it, or even stream it. Put a fork in it, it's done.

The controversy-plagued Golden Globes looks set to return this weekend, but no one will see it online or otherwise. “This year’s event is going to be a private event and will not be livestreamed,” an HFPA spokesperson told Deadline on Thursday. “We will be providing real-time updates on winners on the Golden Globes website and our social media.”

Good, now do the same for the Emmys, the Grammys and the Oscars.

None of us normal people give a shit about any of that anymore.

No need to post the winners on social media. Nobody gives a shit.

Just cancel it altogether and tell all the nominees it was a 5-way tie. That will make them feel better.

One thing that all this COVID silliness has resulted in is celebrities having minimal publicity. Since they almost universally take the hard left view on masks, lockdowns, and everything else, they have been out of the spotlight for the most part. And the best part is no one seems to really care. Watching them freak out because they are not getting attention and their egos are not being stroked is quite amusing. And watching some go bankrupt due to lack of work is even better.
