As mentioned, the hot dogs are pretty darn tasty too.
If you avoid simple carbs, you can get your burger bunless (in a bowl or in a lettuce wrap).
Their buns are really good too.

This exactly. Pretty far from the best burger going in my area, but a damn nice count on the fries.

I find their burgers to be overcooked, charred, dried out, 100% flavor-free.
Tried a hot dog there, not terrible, but the bun was slathered with some sort of grease.
The self-serve soft drink dispenser is the kind with about 743 different choices and combinations, so if you're standing in line behind an illiterate mouth-breather, be aware that you might have a very long wait.
Now for the good news: the fries are very good. Excellent!

Like a lot of things to do with chain restaurants, I think much of it comes down to the individual location. As for the chain itself, they make a pretty good burger that’s a step up from most of the big drive-through chains. If you like burgers, they’re surely worth at least trying out to see if it’s your thing or not.
I often see them compared to In-and-out burger, which I’ve not tried, but you likely have during your time in California. That said, I like what I remember of Silver Streak much better, which you may have also tried in Texas.

Last time I was there a burger, fries and a coke was about $14. Also, they have added hand-dipped milkshakes in the last couple of years. They're good but not worth the price to me.

I like them. Solid burger and fries... a bit pricy though

I’m a fan, but have to get a baby burger and baby fries. It’s still a lot to eat.

Our favorite around us for a burger and the fries are usually fantastic. There are no in n out or what a burger near me to compare them to but they are definetly worth trying. This is a tough crowd, the first comment I hear whenever 5 guys is mentioned is how expensive it is, big deal. Well it isn't McDs or Wendy's or BK, I would much rather pay a little more to see a fresh burger and fries being made than the other three places, it also is a double cheeseburger. It usually cost about $26 for two doubles a large fries and two drinks and you aren't leaving hungry and it's worth every penny to us. I don't usually go out to get a cheap meal.

I visit twice a year. A dedicated calendar event. They put your fries into a cup-container, in the bag, then dump more on top. If you ask the fry guy, he'll make sure they are all fresh, not even sitting five minutes.
That is the way I like them. Too hot to eat.

I don’t much care for In and Out myself. They were quite popular in San Diego but there were no Whataburgers there.
There is a newish In and Out just across the freeway from the Whataburger, Panera and 5 Guys. I don’t think it has shortened the line a Whataburger to any degree.
It sounds like the 5 Guys is worth a try, at least once.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

We have plenty of 5 guys restaurants here. It's a slightly better fast food burger. I miss whataburger.

Better than your average fast food burger by far. I like them, but they are a tad expensive I think.
Fries are really good, but its hit or miss by me on how many you get, one visit you get enough for two people, the next its just a normal large fry order

5 Guys service was good. Clean restraunt, not very busy. Burgers were nothing special. Fries were very hot. My wallet felt butt hurt. Only went one time.

If all Five Guys are like the one near me, they're terrible. The burger was average at best and the fries were so greasy they were limp like spaghetti noodles.

Very overpriced! However, it’s all fresh and you can get anything you want on them. Mine is usually with A1 sauce, fried onions, mushrooms, lettuce. Mmmm

Good burgers, GREAT fries. I give the burgers an 8/10 and the fries a 10/10.

I like the concept but rarely like the execution. I try it about once every 18 months since people rave about it.
The pros/cons below are not from one location, one state (I've had it in multiple states), or even one country (I've had it in Canada and US).
Pros:
They have a limited menu which is a plus (restaurants with vast menus are boil in bag or microwave meals).
You get shelled peanuts while you wait which is a plus.
They give you extra fries
I like the fry seasoning
Large portions. Their regular burgers are two patties so I usually order their little bacon cheeseburger since it's one patty.
Cons:
Most of the time, they cook every drop of moisture out of the burger. Not sure of their cooking process but they certainly aren't cooking to any temperature. I suspect they're using a press on a griddle and their employees are pressing down on the press squeezing all of the juice out. I've had good, moist burgers there before but it's been a long time.
Unlike the fries, the burgers don't seem to be seasoned or if it was it flowed away with the moisture
The fries are highly variable. I've had absolutely perfect fries, but I've had fries where the oil definitely wasn't hot enough and the potato just soaked up the grease instead of getting crisp.
