Reportedly the Colbert show was costing $100MM a year to produce and losing $40MM.

Even the most leftist executives can’t stomach that loss indefinitely.

It can't be that hard to find finger pointers that would work for half that price

Carson was great and I even enjoyed Leon’s opening monologue when I could catch it, but late night shows basically died after that. The few smirking clips I’ve seen of Colbert over the years were enough for me to know I didn’t care to see more.

They probably gave so much notice because of the leases and contracts for the show would be tied to Colbert’s contract which expires in 2026.

Para, Pat Sajak worked on air in Nashville on WSM/WSMV-TV for a while, so when he got his late show, he hired Dan Miller, his good friend and the lead WSMV news anchor to be his straight-man sidekick. A lot of people in Nashville loved Sajak but they loved Dan Miller more so there was something of a celebration there when Sajak’s late show was cancelled and Miller returned home to the anchor desk. I was in Atlanta by then but that was still about the most memorable part of Sajak’s show from my perspective.

For decades, WTOP broadcast pre-1945 comedies on Saturday and Sunday nights at 2330. Cantor, The Marx Bros., etc. Best television ever.

I'm referring to the CBS television network, not the local programming of their affiliates.

I’ll bet if they really wanted to look into this, they would find out that this show has been propped up artificially for years with really bad viewer numbers.

It essentially was a Democrat party propaganda tool because every goddamn time I’d see a promo for the show it would be some various Democrat politician on as a guest along with some liberal asshole activist or musician.

So what I guess I’m trying to say is that they knew it was a failure of a show with bad viewers but they poured money into it to keep it alive as Pravda like tool for them

I find it fascinating to hear calls for “investigations” into cancelling a for profit (pseudo) entertainment show.

In what world do you investigate Nestle if they stop selling nestle quik because it isn’t selling well? These people are beyond retarded. It is the classic, they are being so stupid the other stupid people are starting to notice.

Besides which the parent company is in the process of being bought by a conservative faction. If they want him gone and his overpaid contract how is that even mildly actionable?

Yes, the corporation that owns the rights to this or any TV show has no obligation to explain their reasons for cancelling any of these shows. They don't even need any reason at all. As long as they legally satisfy any contractual obligations, they're free to do whatever they want with their property.

My understanding is that David Ellison (son of Larry) has made lots of noise about bringing the temperature of the room back to center. I read that as moving towards a more conservative view, certainly compared to the current c suite.

All that to say that was my quick read of things. I know Larry donates R and David donates D but I think David can read a room and is speaking/acting accordingly lately. Can a leopard change its spots? Maybe, if the price is right. Lol

Innumerable podcasters on Youtube produce a better show on a shoestring budget. Broadcast TV costs too much to justify its existence.

To paraphrase Alan Tudyk about the show Andor, if it doesn't come back next year, it's because the network failed, not the show. Broadcast in its current form is on the way out.

What’s hilarious is how many people that are complaining about the cancellation will in the same breath state that they don’t watch cable tv.

So a show that hardly anyone watches and is losing upwards of $40 million a year gets the axe and the conclusion is it has to be a right wing conspiracy? Ha!

“A powerful Hollywood group has called for a sweeping investigation into Paramount Global following the abrupt cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

The Writers Guild of America wants New York Attorney General Letitia James to launch a probe into whether the cancellation is related to Colbert's criticism of the network's capitulation to President Trump. …”

Letitia James? Chuckle.
