That's pretty crass.

There are some solidly conservative areas in CA (mainly the interior). Statewide, they're a minority (34%), but it was the only state in the country to give Trump 6,000,000 votes in 2020. Those 6,000,000 conservative people are more than the entire population of Louisiana.

If the new sodium lithium batteries are the future, the rich will just get solar panels + batteries and decouple from the grid entirely. Then the poor, who cannot afford to go off-grid, will be left footing the entire bill. Whenever you tax the rich, the rich have the means to avoid the money grab. Good for them.

Even now plenty of fees in the fine print of a utility bill. I guess after all, electricity & utilities are a ‘basic right’. I’m sure Bernie would say, ‘Wall Street can pay for it’.

To me, it looks like a lose-lose for the utility company in the short and long run.

Short run

They are setting rates too low to get these rates passes.

They are forgoing extra fees, and they are giving all-you-can-use flat rates.

It makes sense that if you have a one-bedroom apartment you should pay less than a 5000 sq ft home.

they are not going to cover their maintenance and generation costs at these rates in the long run.

Long Run, they gouge the rich and the rich drop them until they pass a law that says you have to pay the utility as a tax anyway.

This is another go woke, go broke.

Jackson MS just had similar proposal for water billing based on property values struck down. Part of efforts to repair decades of neglect to infrastructure.

Of course now they are distracted by no garbage pickup for 3 weeks…..

As if Californians need another excuse to move out!

I was stationed in CA in the late 60's. We loved the place & even thought about staying. I'm sure glad we didn't.

You would have understood by now that when you unfairly try and tax wealthier people they take their ball (so to speak) and move to a more friendly environment.

Secondly, the highest rate would impact people making more than $180K/yr. I can only imagine that virtually every household in places like San Francisco makes more than that…

What do you think the lower paying tiers will do to their usage once they are paying a flat rate?

I agree, you jack the rates and at some point it tips the wealthy into solar, maybe that's the plan to get more wealthy people to put up more solar through raising the prices.

Time to do it would be now before the prices go up and the Solar companies jack the prices which is what happens every year. Funny how solar panel costs tend to mimic close to power bill costs, at least that's what I've seen.

With all the State and Federal Solar credits, might as well leverage that home equity into a nice off grid system. The house value will go up in CA...

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
