Looking to get a set of custom shocks made for the Expedition.
One has sprung a leak and the only aftermarket upgrade is KYB which is just a step above stock.

Looking to have some shocks made. Sent some email inquires to King.

Going to get my measurements tomorrow and figure out what the best route is.
Likely will just be a smooth body without the external reservoir as I won’t see any serious off-roading. In this vehicle but do hope to do some old coal and fire roads so a bit of adjustability will be nice.

Looking to see if anyone else has had them made and who they used.

Closest I ever came was a pair of Griggs Racing coil-over struts on my Mustang. They had a lifetime rebuild on them which was nice.

Fox 2.0 seemed to be the go to for the F150 crowd, not sure if they have an Expedition applocation.

With all the options for the Mustang did you want the Griggs solely for the lifetime rebuild or was there something else?

They do not, nor does Icon or anyone buy KYB unfortunately. They would have been ordered a while ago even before I knew my shock was leaking.
The Expedition has an independent rear suspension creating a slightly different setup.

I believe Bilstein makes shocks for your vehicle. Check with rockauto.com. They may even have Sachs brand shocks for your Expedition.

Unfortunately they do not. That was my first thought.

I was able to get some about 25 years ago.

I have a '71 Skylark. Wanted to make a sleeper out of it. Studied the suspension geometry and realized the camber curve would be optimal if the steering knuckle was 1 and 15/16 inches taller. Drew up some spacers and had a machine shop mill them out. Cross referenced mounts (easier done because I worked at Pep Boys back then) to get a shock with stiffer rates and more travel. Gave me an off the shelf replacement for something I didn't know was made. The car would carve out any curve I would throw it into.

If custom shocks turn out to be too spendy, sometimes similar shock mounts can be spread across multiple chassis architecture. Don't know if that will help much if your ride has an 8.8 independent rear.

School Bus mainly but looking to start doing some off roading.

Still a bit limited on how serious we get since the boys are still young. But need to replace them and figure do it right once.

Sadly no one makes anything but a stock replacement for the 2015-2017 Expeditions.

They make arguably the best aftermarket suspension products for the Mustang. Buying those struts was the first step in a planned complete suspension upgrade which never happened. But in the time I had them installed, I enjoyed the hell out of them.

I have my Raptor shocks revalved to fit my style of driving. I wouldn't know where to begin for an Expedition, but many have retrofitted Raptor parts onto F150s. I don't even know if the F150 and Expedition share chassis parts any more. Something to consider.

I'm not sure that's the right vehicle for off-roading. I think the aftermarket suspension choices reflect that.

Custom shocks I always use Penske. But not a chance that makes sense for an expedition under the circumstances you describe. Get a set of bilsteins and move on

For serious off roading no, but that is not what I am looking to do at the moment.

That will be the 4Runner whenever my buddy decides to get himself a new vehicle and I buy his.

Needing new shocks regardless of use and looking for a solid replacement better than the factory unit that is already leaking after 2 years.

Sure KYB does but it tells you something when the “upgrade” is substantially cheaper than than factory.

I know that "back in the day" when I was racing, etc., Koni sold inserts that you could put into any length shock body you desired (or could fabricate up). We used these to increase suspension travel.
I have no idea if they still offer inserts or not. If they do, it's an idea.

No idea on the quality as compared to the OE or KYB, but Sachs appears to make shocks for the ExEL as well.
