Scuba Steve SigI love barn swallows, they have dozens of nests under a bridge a couple blocks away and during the spring and summer swoop through our backyard when I cut the grass, gobbling up the bugs that are disturbed. Their arial acrobatics are straight out of Top Gun.

PatriotThat third one is a “millennial” barn swallow.
He’s mooching off Mom&Dad and refuses to leave.

ggileMy barn swallows were late in arriving this year, but they are now back in full force. I hadn't noticed their laser eyes before but I can certainly attest to their aerial acrobatics.
One early afternoon I was sitting out by the barn, as I am want to do from time to time, and I noticed a hawk had entered our air space. A squadron of barn swallow fighters was dispatched and the hawk was escorted out of our air space. However, a short while later I noticed this same hawk, must have been Russian, coming back from the direction he was earlier dispatched. The same squadron was scrambled, apparently this time with orders to escalate the use of force.
I swear this actually happened. One of the swallows landed on the back of the hawk up near its head and this swallow started pecking at the head of the hawk until the hawk was out of threatening range.
It was a pretty incredible thing to watch. I've got a lot more respect for those little guys now, and having laser eyes is certainly within the realm of possibility.
