First off: I know I am likely 50-100% wrong with every assumption I will make in this post, but... Do you, like me, feel you can make fairly accurate assumptions about a person's personality, to some extent character, and most importantly, whether or not you would want to get dinner, have a drink, invite to your home, anyone on this forum based off their posting habits? I will admit there are a handful of folks that I just like, a handful I do not, and a whole lot that I'd be up for giving a probationary period Do you get a certain feeling or vibe from some folks based off nothing more than their posts? I realize I am no better than 50% right based purely off of randomness, but SIGforum offers me the opportunity to judge in privacy This message has been edited. I thought Para was going to look a bit like Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy (mostly the eyes). I was wrong. Life moves pretty fast. A few months ago, I heard an older fellow drop something in a group setting that had the room roaring with laughter. He said “Some of you, I like. Some of you, I love. Some of you, I can’t fucking stand!” I think that’s probably pretty apt. I haven’t represented myself all that well here. I quit drinking last year, so, it has changed me in a lot of ways. I’d like to think there’s many here who would sit and have a meal and a conversation with me, but likely I’m deservedly in that third category mentioned above. And that’s ok. Maybe it would be a different story with the other guys who also don’t drink anymore. I think bendable would be an interesting person to have dinner with, no joke. ______________________________________________ “There are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too.”

I thought of the blue guy first. Drax is the green guy.
I had always very much wanted to meet JAllen. I think I judged pretty accurately who he was, and I really miss him. A LOT of seconds to that here on the forum. Too many to name.

I've always thought that outside of deliberate deception, you get a better picture of a person from his online posts. The reason for this is that there are much fewer filtering and modulating checkpoints between the thoughts in a person's thoughts and their fingers typing out those thoughts on a keyboard. They don't have the feedback of gauging the "room;" they just see a screen in front of them bereft of visual cues. They don't have the auditory feedback of hearing themselves talk. You heard of the phrase, "A drunk man's words are a sober man's thought?" Online medium reduces a lot of inhibitions. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." I've met with just one member of the SIG forum - and his dad. Bearing in mind that we live, for the most part, in a rarely-visited part of the UK, how rare is that? Both gentlemen were a delight to meet and to talk with. I have no preconceived notions about anybody else here, just as none of you would recognise me from your mental image of me - I'd bet a small fortune that you'd have me wrong most every time.

I've met a couple of SF members, had a beer with at least one, and look forward to meeting a few others. Certainly, to OttoSig's and ReyHRH's points, my willingness to do so has been based on what I've seen of members by way of their posts. Many members here have been helpful to my by way of posts in a thread, or by email -- Warhorse, for instance, even called me one afternoon to walk me through solving a problem. Others, I've swapped tons of email with, learning about things well outside my knowledge base and drawing on their expertise and personal experiences. I can say there are a couple of members I think I would not enjoy being around, but far more whom I'd like to meet. It's an interesting thing, really. Parents teach us to not talk to strangers, then here we go chatting with strangers online and making judgments ("would I be willing to meet this person?") based on those chats. We've got an awesome community here, that's for sure. God bless America.

Yes. You can get a pretty good idea of a person’s character based off their posts on this forum. I have had the pleasure of meeting around 6 forum members, I met one all the way in Australia (which was AWESOME) and every time I have been impressed by our membership. I can’t think of a single forum member I would not want to meet if given the opportunity. By and large the membership here is pretty darn good. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The price of liberty and even of common humanity is eternal vigilance

Meeting members here has been a lot of fun. When I held a Sig shoot, I could not have imagined meeting a finer bunch. Several have become very dear friends. But when I hit the skids earlier in the year, there were a very select few that were responsible of pulli8ng me out of my hole. I think you can indeed, judge by the posts, but meeting face to face only confirms the suspicions! ___________________ "He who is without oil, shall throw the first rod" Compressions 9.5:1

I have met several members over the years. I have been here much longer than the date on my current profile, back to the early days of SigForum. Many no longer participate or only post occasionally. My wife and I were in the Atlanta area in July and had the pleasure of having dinner with Para and his bride. I always pictured him like in a post here from long ago of him as a camera man/correspondent.

I'm currently in Saigon, Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City for those of you born after 1975) and it would be awesome to meet a member here. I joined in 2004 but have yet to meet a fellow SF member in person. ------------------------------------------------------------ “Come on you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?” Sergeant Major Dan Daly (USMC)

Given my location it is quite unlikely i will meet many forum members yet i’ve already met 4 that i remember. It has always been an honor and a pleasure. Here together we stand tall and strong. Good times and worst times. If you don’t belong here you won’t last long, that’s a proven fact. That gives a good hint of whom you are talking to on each thread, wether you agree or not, you are welcome to give your point of view or opinion. I love you, gringos (For those who have never seen me, the last thing i look like is a latino, so the Gringo pun is a pun i make more to myself than any of you). 0-0 "OP is a troll" - Flashlightboy, 12/18/20

In my almost 2 decades here I have had the pleasure of only meeting a few members but they have all been fine gentlemen and a pleasure to be around. I think it's easy to come to conclusions about members based on their postings, but whether those conclusions are accurate or not is the question. For the members i have meet my expectations and reality matched up. Sure, some members rub me the wrong way and i used to have a few members in ignore as their posted just seemed to raise my blood pressure, but I've since learned to deal with that and I don't have anyone on ignore. I'd rather read and be in disagreement than be ignorant. On another forum I joined recently about the Civil War there is one member there who, no matter what he posts or the topic, always seems either rude or condescending. While there isn't anyone here I wouldn't care to go to lunch with, this person on the other forum seems to be an ass and I'd not give him the time of day. Icarus flew too close to the sun, but at least he flew.

I think you are fairly safe since most people posting are gun people with a common interest. I have had bad experiences with people that I knew from college and even relatives. 41

Yeah, that M14 video guy... |
I've met at least four members of the forum and they were all great people. I wanted to meet them because of their posting style, intelligence, demeanor, and critical thinking skills. That, and I happened to be in the area and they took time from their personal lives to meet me. There are those that post that I may not agree with all the time, but I believe for the most part, if we were to meet face to face, we could have civil conversation. People that I don't want to meet are the ones who come and go like a flash in a pan. The forum sifts them out and they either get banned or they realize they can't BS anyone here and decide to leave on their own accord. Tony. Optimistic Cynic |
I have long professed that gun people are the nicest people in the world. I'd extend that to apply especially to SF members. The handful I have met in person and/or had business dealings with have been stellar. As to the question in the initial post, there are some who I have not yet met that I would be very pleased to, and yes, I base this on the character, intelligence, and wisdom they have demonstrated in their posts here.

I think we all do whether it is deliberate or not. We constantly judge others with much less information. A person's looks, race, and occupation are all factors.
