At 53 my hair has receded and thinned enough, and haircuts have increased in price enough, that I feel like I'm wasting money getting a haircut every month. Friday I'm shaving the Ole noggin bald and I'm curious what you guys use. I bought a cheap electric razor made for shaving ones head off Amazon, but I'm looking for a real razor. I've seen some made for keeping the head shaved and would like to get suggestions on what has worked for the forum.

I use an electric when I shave my head, or just shaving the whitewalls.

My preference is the BaByliss Pro. It cuts incredibly close (feels like a razor) and does it in one pass. I highly recommend one. The savings on blades has paid for the razor a few times already.

I have been shaving my head and face daily for over 20 years. At 63 it’s taking a little longer than it used to as the hair seems tougher. I tried an electric razor but it just does not get as close as I like. I want a very smooth feel to it. I have been mainly using either Schick Hydro 5 or Gillette Mach 3 disposable cartridges. Both seem to do the job well, but a cartridge only lasts 3 or 4 days.

I just use regular canned shaving cream, whatever is on sale at Sam’s club. I have had a number of compliments on the shave, and it seems to help make me look younger.

Norelco triple head shaver. I shave down to the bone about twice a week and it’s fairly quick and efficient. I hit it with Palmer’s tummy butter to condition the skin. Been doing that for about 15 years or so now. Way easier, faster, and cleaner than a razor and shaving cream.

I shave mine every two days using Cremo shave cream and Dollar Shave Club Humble Twin. At less than a buck a blade I use a new one every time.
Cremo

Humble Twin

I use the Schick Hydro 5.

Shave in the shower.

Go slow until you've had plenty of practice.

Schick Xtreme3. Love this thing. I shave everyday or every other day, and each stick lasts me a month.

I bought one of those "skullshaver" brand electric jobs a few years back and it worked pretty good while I was using it. Like everything else, laziness got me. lol

Cremo is for sure worth a try. Easily my favorite shave cream. I just use an old Gillette Slim Adjustable set to six with a mild blade, usually Derby Extra.

If I go much more than a week or two, I have an electric razor to trim the bulk of it off.

Then I use a DE safety razor, shave soap, and brush while I'm doing my face.
I used to use a Schick 3 blade disposable but those would fill up w/ hair and were getting expensive as w/ the additional head shaving, they weren't lasting as long.
The DE I can twist to loosen the head a bit to rinse it clean.
The disposable was nice to learn w/ on the head until I transitioned to the DE.

The DE blades average about 15 cents and I get about 4 uses out of them.
The fancy shave soaps can add up but hey, we're not paying for haircuts anymore.

Same. I switch to the "refreshing mint" Cremo several years ago when Barbasol discontinued their cooling menthol shaving cream I liked, and haven't looked back.

I use a Harry's razor and only 2-3 shaves before I toss the cartridge.

They specifically warn that it's NOT to be used for shaving heads but it does a great job. My theory is someone sliced the shit out of their scalp not paying attention and tried to sue.

I was using a Defender razor and Headslick shaving cream until a week or so ago. The Defender razor is a bit of a harsh shave, but it did the job. I decided to try something else because it had started causing more and more ingrown hairs and irritation, despite the fact that I was using the cartridges that were supposed to be for sensitive skin. It got to the point that I would change out a cartridge every week (I shave my head twice a week…mainly because of the irritation it had started causing me).

I switched to Proraso shaving cream and like it quite a bit.

I decided to try out the Leaf razor and its companion Twig razor (for harder to reach spots like around the ears and such). What intrigued me the most about it is that you get all the benefits of DE shaving (cost savings) as well as the convenience of cartridge shaving. I didn’t like the razor blades that came with it so I am trying out a couple different brands of safety razor blades and so far so good. I’d highly recommend it.

I have changed my razor setup I belive for the last time.
Henson AL-13
brush and shaving soap
shaving revolution japanese blades

There is nothing less irritating, or closer shaving than this for me.

I highly recommend it and it makes a great gift as well.

Dorco or Harry's 6 blade cartridges with shave butter. The holy grail combo for me and I shave every other day.
The 6 blade razors are the bee's knees. Super smooth and seems like it takes half the time.

Can I just interject a small comment here to think about
A 6 blade razor that you whap 4-5 times in a spot, becuase its fast, means you ran a blade over that skin 24-30 times. Was that really a good blade, will this really reduce irritation.

A single blade 3-4 times across an area, comes out super smooth and has far less irritation.
Food for thought.
Since I switched to a single blade I have not had a single ingrown hair or blade rash.

I'm on my third tube of the "Refreshing Mint." I've also got their "Sage & Citrus" which is ok, but I like the "Formula 508 Spiced Amber" a bit better. Kinda reminds me of Old Spice, but more subtle. On a hot day (and we have a few here), that mint is really nice.

Oh! And for the love of all that's holy, mrvmax, if you're going to shave your head with a razor, get yourself an alum bar and use it. No matter what razor you're actually using, if you're taking it down to skin, alum bar! Total game changer. A single edge gives me basically no ingrown hairs, and if there's any razor burn or irritation from getting too heavy-handed or over shaving, the alum bar stops it cold.

I challenge you to try an oldschool DE. Hell, shoot me an email with your address and I will send you one to try out with a selection of blades. I'll bet you the cost of the shipping there and back that you like it better if you give it a serious try. I used to use that five, six, and seven blade stuff and switching to a single edge was an eye opener.

Agreed. An alum bar is great for minor cuts and irritation. I also keep a styptic pencil on hand for the occasional bigger cuts. (I've been shaving my head for 15+ years, and I still get a good bleeder once or twice a year. Usually when I get in a hurry. Be very careful around skin tags and moles.)
