Well I might have been clipped. I got a message on what I thought was from my anti virus software saying i needed to do a restart which I clicked on. Now I cannot log in. I get this message
"The user Profile service service failed the the logon. User profile cannot be loaded."

Obviously that message is highly suspect.
I have tried to reboot/restart it but nothing will get me logged in other than logging in in safe mode, which not sure what I can do from there. Any help? Thanks guys.

I'm not a Windows expert, but I did some searching because it's been an hour and nobody has offered you anything yet.

What I read online is that your issue can happen when Windows tries to do a large update. Posts about it go from as recently as within a year ago to over a decade ago.

Many complicated solutions were offered.

The best-case scenario is that you can still log into a different user's account. Perhaps the Admin account? If you can do that, then only your own account's login is busted, and you can create a new user for yourself and move all your own files into that user's folders.

If you can still log into safe mode, the first thing I would recommend is copy all of your personal data to an external drive, because the worst-case scenario is that you lose the entire shooting match.

Without someone to hand to help you, I think you'd best have a second computer handy to do your online searches on while you try to recover the problem child.

There are several ways to attempt to get in.

Safe Mode

System Restore

Using a "Bootable" USB or DVD (with utilities).

It may take a bit of work, especially if malicious application changed or tried to change things that failed and prevent the system from loading Windows.

Best thing until we talk, is to do nothing. (in case malicious code is present. It cannot do anything if the computer is off)

Do you have access to another computer that we can use to create boot media?

Thank you ww and sm. That is helpful. I do have another LT in waiting that I can use. Sort of been waiting for this old guy to give up the ghost.

Restarted the computer in safe mode with networking. Went into system restore and went back a couple of weeks. It took about 10 mins. Restarted and everything worked like before Smile

New laptop will arrive next week. Was time for an upgrade anyways. Thank you guys. Big Grin

I’m glad everything worked out. If you haven’t done so, having a data back up plan will give you peace of mind.

My latest back up is never a week old and at most, the latest first Friday of the month. And I only have to resort to the first Friday’s backup if the first 4 separate backups are completely kaput.
