The old maxim when pointing out failed Marxism attempts is the wan excuse that “True Socialism has not been tried yet!” Somehow, over the generations, every attempt at implementing Socialist/Marxist/Communist policy managed to get it wrong. In those cases where countries retain this leadership for decades (we are looking at you, Cuba), they never make the adjustments to “proper” socialism to fix things, remaining in their economic quagmire.

Yet we still get these insistent attempts at foisting this doomed leadership on a populace, because those were incorrect applications, according to the studied eggheads promoting the political system, while comfortably ensconced in capitalist countries. It seems revealing that these experts never make the trek to these nations to fix the problem, despite professing to have all the answers, like they will translate the cartoon instructions on an IKEA bookshelf that is listing like the Living Room Library of Pisa.

And this brings us to The Stale Apple, as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced his plan to fulfill his campaign promise to open a collection of city-run grocery stores. This alone is a surprise, after he tossed aside his other pledged Utopian solutions, like the mobile homeless shelters – wait, sorry: “Free public transportation”.

This pie-in-the-sky (but not on the shelves) idea is meant to supply city denizens with affordable and plentiful grocery items, all under the benevolent supply of the city government. Already you see the issue when applying the professionalism and efficiency of the DMV offices to the food supply, but Mamdani came out Sunday to boast about his achievements after 100 days in office, and he announced his plan for the NYC grocery project.

Zohran Mamdani, the Communist-Islamist mayor of New York City, is certainly living up to his Communist label with the announcement his government-owned grocery store will cost a ridiculous $30 million and take three years to build.

“This store will be open in 2029,” Mamdani told supporters this week about his plans to build a 9,000 square foot store on a vacant lot. “The reason that we’re announcing it first is that, unlike other stores, this will be built from the ground up.”

This East Harlem store will cost an absurd $30 million.

Only a socialist would require $30 million and three years to build a freaken grocery store, and I am not alone in that thinking.

“I almost fell back when I saw the $30 million number,” Anthony Pena, president of the National Supermarket Association, told the New York Post. “Even a high-end, gourmet store in the middle of Manhattan wouldn’t cost that much to build.”

Avi Kaner, who once owned a grocery chain in New York, told the Post that “$30 million is an awful lot to spend to build one supermarket.”

And what’s Mamdani offering with his $30 million spend and three-year build? Will East Harlem see a glorious grocery palace complete with massage therapy, IMAX movie theaters, free daycare, a coffee bar, and a full spa? Nope…

“When it comes to the products that we will be selling at the city-run grocery stores, there will be an essential basket of goods that will be guaranteed a cheaper price, and cheaper than what they’re being sold at currently,” Mamdani said.

Oh.

Two things to keep in mind…

First, that $30 million is just to build the thing. My guess is that at least half of that money will be used for graft to pay off Mamdani’s supporters in the unions and the like, but that $30 million does not include the cost of running the store, purchasing the food, and operating at a loss.

Second, what will this government-run store do to all those East Harlem grocers who require a profit to remain in business? Mamdani’s either going to bury them in bankruptcy, or he’ll have to subsidize them to keep them in business.

Mamdani has another $40 million set aside for one government-owned grocery store in the four remaining boroughs. Those will be cheaper because the city will move into an existing structure instead of building a new one.

These schemes never work, and there is nothing about this plan that doesn’t spell boondoggle.

I can’t wait to watch history repeat itself. New York City getting what it voted for is grand entertainment.

Trump Rips Mamdani, Warns NYC 'Has No Chance'

President Donald Trump said Thursday that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is "destroying New York" and that the federal government should stop funding a city that "has no chance."

Trump reprised a threat he made before the New York mayoral election to cut federal funding if Mamdani won.

"Sadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It has no chance!" Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

"The United States of America should not contribute to its failure. It will only get WORSE," he continued.

"The TAX, TAX, TAX Policies are SO WRONG. People are fleeing. They must change their ways, AND FAST," he wrote.

"History has proven, THIS 'STUFF' JUST DOESN'T WORK. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DJT"

Mamdani, 34, took office Jan. 1 as the city's first Muslim mayor and a self-described democratic socialist.

His fiscal plan targets corporations and top earners to fund free buses, universal childcare and affordable housing.

The Mamdani administration has circulated a revised proposal that would raise roughly $1.75 billion annually through taxes on corporations and unincorporated businesses operating in the city, scaled back from a statewide hike on which he campaigned.

Albany has to approve it.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has called corporate and income tax hikes "nonstarters." As a compromise, the Democrat endorsed a pied-a-terre tax on expensive secondary residences, which is projected to yield about $500 million a year.

Before the November 2025 election, Trump said in a post on Truth Social that it was "highly unlikely" he would contribute federal funds beyond "the very minimum as required" if Mamdani won, and that it was his "strong conviction that New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win."

The political picture is mixed.

A recent Emerson College poll at Mamdani's 100-day mark found 43% approval, 27% disapproval and 59% of respondents saying the city is on the wrong track.

A Marist poll taken in late March told a different story: 55% of city residents viewed the mayor favorably, and 56% said New York was moving in the right direction, a sharp reversal from October 2025, when 66% said it was off course.

It's a "basket of goods" because all the shelves will be empty just like back in the good ole Soviet Union days. The few items that will be there on any given day will only fill a small basket, at best. No need for a big shopping cart.

Hochul Joins Mamdani In New York's "Eat The Rich" Movement

The hunt is on...

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani used Tax Day to announce a new fee targeting wealthy people who still linger in the city after moving their primary residences to other states.

The tax, called pied-à-terre (or “foot on the ground”) is designed to hit people who still maintain high-value properties in the city. It is a remarkably moronic effort to ensure that wealthy people cut all ties with the city. However, Gov. Kathy Hochul has yielded to the far left and joined the effort.

Mamdani, a socialist who supports the “decommodification” of private property, is seeking major tax increases, including a 10% property tax, to fund his pledges for free buses, city-run stores, and other policies.

He will need it. Mamdani not only recently admitted that he cannot fulfill his pledge for free buses this year, but that he will only build the first of five promise city-run stores next year at the cost of $30 million — almost half of what he set aside for all five promised stores.

The new measure would add a fee to existing taxes for owners of high-value properties worth more than $5 million.

Mamdani declared the new fee part of “Happy Tax Day,” which will generate $500 million more to “help fund things like free child care, cleaner streets, and safer neighborhoods.”

He is also pushing Hochul to increase taxes on the 33,000 New Yorkers earning more than $1 million annually as well as those corporations that have not left the state. Other blue states from Washington to Virginia are moving toward similar millionaire taxes.

The move is consistent with other blue states seeing the same exodus of wealthy taxpayers and businesses due to the rising budgets and tax burdens. Rather than seeking to make their states magnets for investment, California and other states are pursuing retroactive wealth taxes and so-called “Teddy Bear laws” that refuse to recognize changes of residency.

New York has used its “Teddy Bear” regulations to declare that people who fled to other states are still residents subject to taxation because of the location of their sentimental attachments in New York (like a Teddy Bear) from pets to children.

In my new book, “Rage and the Republic,” I discuss these taxes and how they are the final stage of economic atrophy for states like New York. Politicians like Hochul cannot muster the courage to face bloated budgets, excessive union pension contracts, and runaway spending. In other words, it is too difficult to create a state that draws investment and residents like so many red states. Instead, they are chasing the remaining wealthy people who still maintain contacts with the state.

The result is a form of economic Darwinism in which the herd of wealthy taxpayers is thinned further by capturing the slowest or most nostalgic individuals.

The irony is that Houhul and Mamdani are working to cut the final ties of these former residents, convincing them that they are viewed as parasites to be pursued relentlessly for more taxes.

In Rage and the Republic, I discuss these efforts as a dangerous form of “economic factionalism,” a popular tactic historically used by demagogues to curry public favor by vilifying the wealthy.

Mandani denounced those who “store their wealth in New York City real estate [and] reap the huge financial rewards” while “hurt[ing] working New Yorkers.”

This is evident in the renewed claims of figures such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.), who used Tax Day to renew calls for her unconstitutional wealth tax.

Warren posted on X that “It’s time to make the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share. It’s time to pass a wealth tax.”

Socialist Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders also made the same claim. In a Guardian op-ed, Sanders cited shocking figures claiming that Elon Musk pays a tax rate of only 3.3% while Jeff Bezos pays less than 1%.

The claim comes from the dubious source ProPublica, which performs a statistical sleight of hand. In reality, the publication shows that figures like Jeff Bezos paid $973 million in taxes on income of $4.22 billion. That is a 23% tax burden, not less than 1%. Musk paid 30% with a $455 million tax bill.

The top 1% of taxpayers in this country paid roughly 40% of all taxes. The top 5% pays over 40% of taxes.

The Democrats are committed to economic factionalism as a strategy for the midterm elections. It is a major driver of the rage politics that many hope will allow them to regain power in November. It will come at a great cost to states like New York.

Hochul and Mamdani can hunt down the remaining wealthy taxpayers lingering in their state. In the end, it will not generate nearly as much revenue as it will cost as residents and businesses look elsewhere for position living and business environments.

The best way to improve the standard of living in these states is to improve their economies and tax bases. Instead, blue states like California and New York are raising costs across the board, including through pushes for a $ 30-per-hour minimum wage. In California, the massive increases in the minimum wage have already resulted in substantial job losses and business closures.

It is unlikely that many wealthy individuals will stick around to experience what Mayor Mamdani calls “the warmth of collectivism.” Instead, it will be average New Yorkers who are burned by his “eat the rich” policies.
