Okay, I live in the woods so I wasn't aware. I came across by accident that I'm going to need a passport card (or some other form of REAL ID) starting basically now in order to fly domestically. My driver's license is no longer sufficient. To the government of my state - thank you very fucking much. Were you guys aware? Probably.... As usual, I'm the last to know. https://www.dhs.gov/real-id "Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it." I got one last week, just because I renewed my passport and wanted another photo ID. The turn around was 2wks using the regular service. __________________________ Keep your rotor in the green The aircraft in trim Your time over target short Make it count

Has been for some time. Washington has an "enhanced" driver's license. Basically you bring specific identification and get a new license. You are required to prove citizenship. Likely, you State has this. Have had an active passport since the 1970s so no problem. https://www.dmv.org/driving-ab...passport-license.php “ The work of destruction is quick, easy and exhilarating; the work of creation is slow, laborious and dull.

I had not seen this before and I have never been asked for more than a driver license when flying domestically, but I live in Texas which I see is considered compliant with “Real ID”. I dont see why a state ID is not acceptable other than a government money grab, but I also didn’t thoroughly read through the state “Real ID” requirements. I just recently renewed my passport and figured I would go ahead and get the passport card so I guess that is good. I also have the US Customs Global Entry, which makes entry back into the country easier and gives you TSA Pre-Check. NRA Benefactor Life Member

California DL isn't valid for Fed ID (such as flying) because CA gives DLs to illegal aliens. CA and other states have had something like 10 years to get their shit together & haven't done it, so the Feds quit extending the deadline.

Yeah it looks like 50% or more of the states are not compliant and were granted an extension until 1/22/18 so yes the OP can thank his state for not being compliant and causing his driver license to not be acceptable. NRA Benefactor Life Member

When I renewed my Passport, I got both the regular size and the wallet card, works well for border crossing for Canada and Mexico—does not work for OCONUS aircraft arrivals into USA. The drivers license thing is because many States don’t have a centralized issuing agency. Kentucky issues licenses through the 120 individual County Clerks Offices instead of a single State-issuing agency; too much possibilities for positive identification variances by the separate clerks. --------------------- DJT-45/47 MAGA !!!!! You don't specifically need the passport card. Passports now come in two forms: the traditional book form and the card. The book form ($110.00 if I remember correctly) is accepted for all passport requirements. The card format, I think it was thirty bucks, is accepted for flights within the U.S. but not international flights. It is OK for driving to and from Canada and Mexico, but not for flights to / from those countries. So the card is somewhat more limited (not a factor if you're not going to fly internationally) but more convenient to carry, as it's the size of a Driver License so you can just stick it in your wallet. SWMBO and I have both. The passport book stays in the safe unless needed. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

To get a REAL ID drivers license, I need: Your Social Security card Your birth certificate Two forms of documents proving your residency 1) What documents prove residency? Utility bill? Phone bill? I haven't a clue. What about people who rent (like rent a room or students living in dorms?)? 2) What about people who have Green Cards? I have a friend who has a Green Card and am trying to help him figure out what he needs to do (ie - no US birth certificate). 3) if passports are sufficient, why do we need to bring in this additional documentation - why can't we just show our passport to the DMV to get the REAL ID version of the driver's license? 4) Doesn't the DMV already have my SSN? If not, why do they need my SSN now for this? I'm not sure if they already have it (maybe they do when you apply for the license - been so long that I can't remember). If not, I really don't want to give it to them. I don't see how my SS card is anymore secure and official than showing my passport with my picture in it. I'm bewildered -- none of the required docs have my picture on it. "Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it." Yeah I knew this. I read a lot. I frankly was shocked that Mississippi has a REAL ID. Good reminder though. Mississippi is progressive in small ways.

You're right. But like you, I don't want to carry the book version unless I'm traveling internationally. So, not entirely accurate but for my intents and purposes, I need the card. But in any case, sounds like I won't need that card either if I can get the REAL ID compliant version of a driver's license. "Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it." I see that Ohio is compliant and I'm flying to Savannah GA on Friday. Georgia is compliant as well but it seems to read that they can accept a Georgia license for ID. Will my Ohio drivers license get me on my return flight? _____________________ Be careful what you tolerate. You are teaching people how to treat you.

Governmental rules. Inevitable. You can complain to your elected state officials. You can send an email and voice your displeasure. Of course that will not change anything but you may feel better. Hope this helps.

My WA drivers license may or may not be good for domestic air travel after, IIRC, January 2018. My retired military ID card (DD2AF) will work in place of my state DL. There are other forms of ID that are acceptable. https://www.tsa.gov/travel/sec...ening/identification It's always a good idea to have a passport anyway in case you need to travel internationally e.g. if a relative is overseas and get sick/injured, and needs assistance.

You can't go home again |
When I lived in NY ,my old DL was not valid for flying. Check your state to see if they have an "enhanced" drivers license. NY did and of course you have to pay a few more bucks for it but it will get you past TSA and onto the plane. You can upgrade your existing license in NY as well. I was renewing my Passport 4 years ago and found out about the passport card. It's like 30 bucks more when you renew and honestly, I use it any time I travel. it's just much easier than fishing my license out. Always good to go, never any problems at TSA, hotels, etc. --------------------------------------- Life Member NRA “If you realize that all things change, there is nothing you will try to hold on to. I got the card, it is useful for a small addon. AZ has banned RealID as law, but the MVD will provide you with one for an extra $25. Just provide all the proof, like Birth Cert, utility bill etc. RealID has a gold star on it. The gold star is universally recognized.

I live in Washington State. Basically, fog a mirror and get a drivers license. The Feds called BS so I’d need a passport card or Enhanced Drivers License to get through TSA in the future..
