The Obama administration pursued gun control by stealth in a number of ways, including an effort to reclassify certain types of AR-15 ammunition.

Three years ago we filed a Freedom of Information Act request to learn more about this, and last year, with no response, we sued.

Now we have filed a brief in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia asking the court to order the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to produce more than 1,900 pages of records relating to the its proposed reclassification that would effectively ban certain types of AR-15 ammunition as armor-piercing.

The Freedom of Information Act needs some teeth. Agencies should have to produce certain documents within a certain time period.Serious sanctions and fines should be written in for non compliance.

And this post is not as much about an ammunition ban as it about bureaucracies jerking around the public and congress who hve every right to see these records.

That ATFE would think its way through an ammunition ban? No.

That someone would go to court to bring the process to light, and just generally make the point that attempts to ban ammunition will result in a giant pain in the ass? Yes, pleasantly.

But saying ATF drags feet on FOIA doesn’t get near the clicks as “ERMAGHAD ATF BLAH BLAH AMMUNITION BAN”.

Click Bait titles. They suck.

Those of us on Sigforum knew this was going on under the Obama administration. Thank God for Trump and the defeat of the Hildebeast or it would have continued.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Stupid question: how is the M855 with a steel penetrating tip not "armor-piercing?" Isn't it supposed to penetrate a steel helmet? I've only used plain old FMJ 55 gr. in my Ruger AR.
