BamaJeepsterWe know someone competing in the 2017 Mongol Derby...And after day 1, she's leading!
A local woman we know is riding in the 620 mile, 7-10 day horseback race on wild ponies across Mongolia. They ride cross country on these wild ponies, carry only 11 pounds of gear and rely on nomads for food, water and shelter

If you or your family are into horses you've probably read or heard of Leslie Wylie Bateman - she helped launch Horse Nation and contributes to Eventing Nation. She came up in the Knoxville equestrian scene and we met and knew her when she was competing in Eventing and was blogging before starting Horse Nation.
They track the riders with GPS - here's the track as of this morning - she is the red dot in the lead:

So, if you didn't already have a favorite in the Derby, pull for Leslie!

She's got about a 6km lead at the mandatory end of day 1. They are bedded down for the night.
