If you're not aware, Purdue lost its head coach to Louisville last week.

Today, the school announced they've hired Drew Brees as an interim head coach for the bowl game.

Purdue has already hired a new head coach - Ryan Walters (DC Illinois).

Hopefully - This will help settle things and keep the recruiting class together.

Hedley Lamarr: Wait, wait, wait. I'm unarmed.
Bart: Alright, we'll settle this like men, with our fists.
Hedley Lamarr: Sorry, I just remembered . . . I am armed.

Does he have any eligibility left? With Oconnell reportedly sitting out, we're going to need an arm.

Shitty for Brohm to not wait until after bowl game, but he always had 1 foot out the door. I like what I've seen so far from Walters, but hope he can get good OC/QB coach.

As a lifelong Saints fan Drew is already a legend. It’s cool to see him step up and help them out for the bowl game. He’s always spoken very highly and fondly throughout his career of Purdue and his time there. I saw not only O’Connell but their WR, TE, and CB have opted out of the game as well. It sucks seeing so many opt out of bowl games that should showcase who got them there.

As for coaching, Brohm I’m sure he HAD to leave for the same reason they hired his replacement so quickly. With the ridiculously early start of recruiting, it forces their hand as the new school in most cases require them as part of the contract deal, to start immediately to begin their own recruiting. I loved the hire of Brian Kelly for us at LSU last year, but I would have liked to see him (and all coaches) get to coach their team through the end of the bowl seasons. But it was a deal or no deal start date for the contract. The coaches, players, and fans all deserve to celebrate those achievements together.

Something needs to be done about the start date of recruiting to fit with the seasons end date. Good luck to y’all in the game all the same!

Maybe this is his spot. He found out he was not so popular when he left the Saints. I am not sure why broadcasting did not work for him. Seemed to fit in ok, but I guess he did not have color commentating in his vocabulary. I really do not know.

Good for Brees. Between this and hiring Walters as head coach it should hopefully plug the dam in the transfer portal, shore up recruiting (Brees is already the face of our Name, Image, and Likeness recruiting campaign), and possibly lure a few into playing in the Citrus Bowl.

The rumor mill has Purdue trying to get Brees to be the Offensive Coordinator next year. Brees and his wife met at Purdue, but they haven't lived in Indiana in a long time.

I think the biggest contributor is when the NCAA changed transfers from sitting out a full season to having a transfer portal so they can play next season. It makes November and December crucial if they want to be a registered student and participate in spring practice.

The transfer portal is not going to be dammed. It should. Get passed over, transfer. It is not fair to the school and the other players. The coaching carousel will continue. It is not even athlete scholar anymore. Farm team for the pros.

Brohm left Purdue in a helluva lot better shape than he found them and there was nothing underhanded in the way he left.

Good Luck to Purdue and Good Luck to Jeff Brohm - a class act

Transfer portal needs to go.

If it stays add a year of wait time on the sideline, like it used to be

No transfer portal in high school. Wait out a year.

Purdue just hired Ryan Walters as head coach from Illinois. Young mid 30s. This will make Brees an asst. Coach for one game.

What is the OPS post? I am confused.

At 36 years old, Ryan Walters becomes the fourth-youngest head coach in major college football as Purdue University introduced the former University of Illinois defensive coordinator as the new Boilermakers head coach at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon in West Lafayette.5 days ago

Obviously.

The OP, Shaql, posted on Dec 15th that:

Today, you posted as if you had some breaking news that Purdue hired Walters, and Brees was hired for 1 game.

Not sure how Brees playing asst. coach for a nothing bowl game helps keep recruits in the fold.

I think this is all about Brees. BTW I thought OPS referred to some operational postion. Foiled by acronyms and the lack of an apostrophe again.

You are correct, my post was a bit harsh on Brohm. Lville has been like a crazy ex since he started. The quick hire of Walters & silence on the bowl game seems to indicate this was known before it was announced and it was expected. Right before the biggest bowl game we've had since the last time Brees was on the bus isn't that fun, though.
As for leaving it better than he found it, we'll see. Purdue isn't a mecca for recruiting & I hope it never becomes one. If you look at the successful players from the last 20 years, they've all been developed, not anointed. The teams that had success all had chemistry that made them fun to watch. Brohm was good on the offensive side, but his D hasn't been great & this year was atrocious.

I actually like the transfer portal, I don't see it being abused any more than any of the other rules the NCAA has and it really benefits the non-big-name schools. You're going to make an 17yo pick the program that could make or cost him millions with no recourse? There's plenty of snakes that will tell a kid anything to get him on campus. NCAA FB & BB hasn't be amateur for years, the N-I-L & transfer portal just transfer some of the money to the players. After game $100 hand-shakes were common when I was there (lived next to a couple FB players & had alcohol connections so I was handed quite a few of those Benjamins.).

As I stated earlier I do not. The two kickers ND got through the portal was all around ok. Both had finished their Ivy League degrees and I guess are working on graduate degrees. In contrast there are plenty transferring without degree completion. Most of those will not play in the NFL and most likely not get a degree. The transfer portal does not help with team cohesiveness in my opinion.
