UK Government Warned Of "Civil Unrest" Over People's Inability To Pay Energy Bills

Zero Hedge
THURSDAY, AUG 25, 2022 - 09:05 AM

Energy executives in the UK have warned the government that the country faces the prospect of mass civil unrest as a result of people being unable to afford their heating and electricity bills this winter.

The government is being asked to approve “radical” COVID-style bailouts for small businesses which face total ruination as a result of soaring energy costs.

“Energy company bosses have warned ministers they fear civil unrest if nothing is done to cushion the blow of rising bills,” reports the Telegraph.

One senior industry figure said that when people “realize how bad this is going to get,” they could take their anger to the streets in the form of violent demonstrations.

The comments are similar in nature to those made by campaigner Tom Scott, who is urging people to refuse to pay their bills, and says social disorder is on the horizon.

“There was a major riot in London [in 1990],” said Scott, referring to the poll tax riots.

“That’s not something I would like to see, but I think it’s almost inevitable that unless the Government does take much more effective action to help people, there will be widespread civil unrest.”

Despite the warnings, Prime Minister Boris Johnson continues to insist that Brits should maintain their support for ‘the current thing’ – by prolonging the war in Ukraine.

“We also know that if we’re paying in our energy bills for the evils of Vladimir Putin, the people of Ukraine are paying in their blood,” said Johnson.

“And that’s why we know we must stay the course. Because if Putin were to succeed, then no country on Russia’s perimeter would be safe, and… (that) would be a green light for every autocrat in the world that borders could be changed by force,” he added.

Even as many Brits struggle to pay for basic necessities, with food inflation also soaring, Johnson just approved a further £54 million of taxpayer money to be sent to Ukraine to buy new weapons systems.

Energy bills are set to soar to £6,522 by next April, a level that threatens to push a third of the country into poverty.

“Consultancy Auxilione said the price cap will be three times the current limit of £1,971-a-year,” reports the Daily Mail, with bills having been closer to £1,000 a year before the start of the war in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the UK continues to pursue disastrous ‘net zero’ green energy policies that are unfit for purpose while refusing to allow fracking, which would solve the country’s energy crisis in a heartbeat.

Perhaps many Brits will choose to keep warm this winter by lighting fires on the streets instead of paying their heating bills at home.

How is it that so many countries do the same stupid things at the same time? Even when other countries are collapsing due to the same stupidity - Sri Lanka, Argentina - they still keep marching down a dead end, or a cliff.

All of these problems are self-inflicted due to unsound energy policy. Germany getting rid of clean nuclear power and depending on Russia gas. Refusal to permit gas extraction by fracking.

Governments are failing their people as they tilt at windmills trying to prevent "climate change".

It may not be as bad here... but rising energy prices will hit many Americans hard too:

Horrific Biden Consequence, 20 Million American Households Behind on Electricity Bills, Pending Shutoff

Long-term CTH readers might remember in 2014 when President Obama claimed U.S. families had been paying too little for electricity for too long. As soon as Joe Biden took office, he began implementing the Green New Deal energy policy that, (a) directly forces higher costs for energy; and (b) is now creating massive problems.

In July I noted my own electricity bill had jumped 28% in a single month. That bill was followed by another almost identical increase this month. A review of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for July [Data Here] shows that nationally the same thing is happening. The year-over-year electricity price has increased 15.2%. However, worse still, the July increase alone was 1.9%, which figures to an annualized rate of 22.8%.

When the growth rate of monthly increase is exceeding the year-over-year result, that means future higher prices are coming. This is a serious problem that cannot be overstated. Already struggling with a doubling of gas prices, massive food price increases at the grocery store and the pain of all costs for goods far outpacing any rate of wage increase, this type of uncontrollable increase in price of electricity is going to hit the middle class hard.

Steve Cortes calls this the backside of the Biden created inflation hurricane. The backside of a hurricane is the worst because it hits from the opposite direction upon already weakened infrastructure.

The hurricane metaphor is apt because any increase in energy costs will be accompanied by the simultaneous arrival of another wave of food inflation, as the massive increases in field and crop prices start to feed into the food supply chain headed to our forks next month.

Making matters that much worse, Bloomberg is now reporting that 20 million households are now behind in their utility bills, specifically electricity bills, and the moratorium on shut offs has ended. [Paywall Article] Steve Cortes has written about the issue on his substack [Here].

One in six U.S. households, that is tens-of-millions of Americans, are now facing having their electricity turned off due to lack of payment. It is certainly understandable how this horrific outcome would happen. Joe Biden’s energy policies are destroying working class families with unsustainably higher prices.

20 million households is a catastrophic level of utility default. This is a serious issue with major social implications created by the desperation of those families. Middle- and lower-income families cannot survive this level of financial pressure.

Rents are behind. Mortgages are behind. Car payments are behind. And now this report on utility bills.

Steve Cortes appeared with Steve Bannon to discuss – WATCH:

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Funny, isn't it? What are the odds that it's completely random vs. some organized effort?

I thought this quote from a Thomas Fazi article summed it up nicely:

"However, as economic policies have become tailored to the interests of a handful of immensely powerful mega-corporations, any sense of the collective or national interest was lost. A small elite was allowed to accrue immense wealth and power, while laying waste to our societies’ workforce, industrial capacity, public services and vital infrastructures, leaving our countries poorer, weaker and dependent on foreign (and increasingly hostile) nations for the supply of everything from energy to food to basic medical supplies."

Isn't funny how the people pushing the agenda do not suffer from its consequences.
Most of the big name people pushing the green deal have no clue what it is to pay monthly bills.

It's always the middle class who suffer the most.

I have a feeling it is going to be a very cold winter this year.
I can see a lot of people moving to warmer states this winter.

Before I got tired of arguing with idiots, I would talk to liberals from time to time. When I mentioned to them that Socialism has been tried many times in many different places and failed miserably every time, they always had the same answer.

It failed because the wrong people were in charge, not because Socialism can't possibly succeed.

Incredible. My relief on my ship just told me the same exact thing today. He lives in Meredith I think. We crew changed today, and during our turnover after going over all the pertinent engineering issues onboard, we of course bullshit about current events. We see eye to eye on everything. He mentioned the insane increase in his electrical bill. NUTS!

I’m in the Houston area as well. I just checked my contract and I am good until November 2023 at around 9 cents per kWh.

Absolutely correct.

As we all recognize, this has nothing to do with saving the planet. The retards in this country can't tell the difference between women and men or what bathroom people should be using, so "saving the planet" isn't even in their universe of possibilities.

And yes, FJB should be the comment on everyone's lips, and national focus going forward.

Never underestimate the capacity of people to endure hardship in the name of political ideology. We've seen this to some extent in California. German magazine Der Spiegel has been writing about this in Germany for 10 years now. Notice any political uprisings in Germany?
