The fairgrounds in LaGrange, Kentucky is packed with new Ford SUVs and trucks (plants in Louisville). Waiting for computer chips.

Any other areas of the country where you are seeing this? They’re not new cars, look to be in great condition, and I’d love to know how to buy one if you’re able. Seems to be all manner and make of vehicles but yesterday I didn’t notice a preponderance of SUVs. The cars will disappear for a few months then in comes another slug. I’m talking several 10 acre plus vacant lots, parked bumper to bumper. I thought maybe something to do with the rental market but there are just too many to account for that I think.

I saw that while on a boat tour of Tampa Bay and the tour guide said they were going to be shipped to other countries. Are the vehicles you are talking about near the bay?

Yep, right north and also to the east of the airport. Not far from the ports I guess. If we got a shortage of used cars here, why send them overseas?

Highest bidder. There are a couple of huge auto auctions around that area

The Ford dealers here never really slowed down. They had a brief time when inventory was down but after that they always had 10-15 new trucks on the lot. The Dodge dealers have always kept 5-6 new trucks on the lot. The rest deal in used cars.

What do these chips some of these cars are missing do? Because if they control all that driver assistance and auto start/stop nonsense maybe I should go get a new car now instead of waiting a year like I planned. I’d love none of that in my vehicle.

Those had better be vehicles bought for cash because I can't imagine a bank would be too willing to finance a vehicle for retail price that is incomplete, compromising the asset securing their loan. That and the safety aspects of those vehicles would be highly suspect likely making insurance companies unwilling to insure them.

Regardless what they 'control', the bigger issue is the integration of 'all' systems throughout the vehicle. Pull a couple sensors or a module anywhere in your vehicle and watch the dash light up like a Christmas tree, assuming the vehicle will even start or run.

In Chevy's case it's heated seats and heated steering wheel, they will install these later. Things they have just gotten rid of at least for now are auto stop (yaaaaayyy) and steering column lock.

Steering column lock? As in anti-theft? Isn't that mechanical?

Auto stop: Is that the thingy that applies the brakes, as in my wife's car, when the back-up or cross-traffic sensors decide that the car needs to stop? Or are you referring to the engine stop / re-start at red lights?

Steering column lock, it just stops the steering wheel from moving. These are push button start vehicles

Auto stop is a very annoying feature that stops the engine when you stop at a red light and then restarts when you take your foot off the brake. Supposed to save gas

I believe Auto-Stop refers to the system that turns the engine off when you come to a stop, at a light/stop sign, for example.

I also saw that GM was removing AFM/DFM (cylinder deactivation) on some V8 models due to chip shortage.

Personally, I'm hoping to stumble across a new Maverick or Bronco Sport with no $5K or more ($10K additional jab for a hybrid) adjusted market value. Frown

My dad is on 2 waitlists for a Maverick Hybrid.
He just picked up a cheap Mini for an efficient daily to offset the 6.2 V8 guzzler in his Denali.

I just wish my little 2.4l Malibu could regularly do more than 22mpg.
Has me on the hunt for another motorcycle.

^^I couldn't run fast away fast enough last time I was on a Ford lot and saw the price of a base Maverick hybrid. About $12K additional stuck onto a $21K ute.

I have a 2019 Fiesta ST. 0-60 in 6.6 seconds and incredible handling. Due to Premium approaching 6 bucks a gallon I've been driving like a little old lady. Last tank I had 410 miles on the odometer for 11.0 gallons used with an average speed of 27 mph. Little bugger does real well on mileage when you stay out of the turbo and time the lights so they change as you coast up to them. Note, I could run the cheap stuff but my Fiesta does 4 mpg better with premium and makes about 40 more HP.

Small Cars RULE

I've stopped counting.

Yeah, hard pass on that.
I know the new car mgr at one of our local dealers, so shouldn't be any markup shenanigans there.

As gas prices continue to climb just how attractive can these trucks & SUVs remain? Nice to have one sit in the driveway and cant afford to run them.

I drove 50 miles this afternoon to do a dealer trade for the local GMC dealer. The dealership I went to was the deadest looking dealer I have seen in a long time. No new inventory to speak of, no staff, etc.
