Hospital is the best place to be. Water and AC will run no matter what.

I think this could be very wet in Houston, but not an apocalypse. Corpus Christi might get it bad.

But hurricanes can do a lot of unpredictable things. Could fizzle, could get a really bad amount of rain, if it really stalls. That is what Allison did in '01.

Tatortodd, the current tracks have it stalling over Corpus, not drifting east.

In Houston, this is true now, because they had big problems before and fixed them.

In Allison a number of Houston med center hospitals shut down because the entire med center lost external power and the hospital's backup generators and/or power switching equipment were under 20 feet of water in flooded subbasements. Some of them had to evacuate all patients to other hospitals the day after Allison hit.

After that everyone became aware of the problem and fixed it, both by moving power equipment to higher floors and installing flood gates to help prevent building flooding.

So now the med center is in much better shape and is prepared for worse storms than Harvey.

(My recollection is that the collective Houston medical center still managed not to lose any patients as a result of the power failure and patient evacuation.)

I have family in Conroe, hope they just get rain. Flooding will be bad if it stalls like they are saying.

They don't need rain. They've had the usual amount this year.

My recollection of hurricane predictions from living several years in S. Florida is that they are very good on tracks but lousy on intensities.

we're booked on a 5 day cruse out of Galveston Saturday. Cruse line emailed and said the Port Authority has curtailed all maritime activity. If somehow the port gets open and they "go" it would be and adventure getting from DFW to Galveston driving into the teeth of the storm. But if they do go and we don't show, we're probably out the cash.

Lot of areas around Houston tend to flood when there's anything more than a heavy dew. I think we'll get some flooding with this one. Had meetings today at work, and more tomorrow, to make sure we keep everyone informed and tell them not to drive through water on their trip to work. Turn around if you don't KNOW you can make it. We just went out and made sure the drains were clear.

If they go and you are onboard, it might not be any fun anyway.

I've never been at sea in an actual hurricane, but I did spend a few unforgettable days on the USS Alamo, a huge amphibious dock landing ship, out in the Gulf of Catalina in a storm. Think ping pong ball in a washing machine.

The stewards rang the chimes for lunch in the wardroom one day. I went down there and was the only one who showed up. As I was polishing off the soup and getting ready to attack the excellent salad, a couple of ship's company regulars came lurching in, about the color of this website. I invited them to join me, but one jabbed the other and said, "Look at that fucking reservist. He's so fucking stupid, he doesn't even know enough to be sea sick," and disappeared into their staterooms to toss more cookies.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Why ? If for pure leisure I would go somewhere else. They will likely be just starting to repair the beaches following a storm surge and/or possible epic flood. The water will be churned up. The beaches and water are not that nice to start with... If this thing backs up and heads east along the coast through next week there may not be any infrastructor in operation come 9/8.

The cruise ship will not sail. I know this for certain. I have experience in this department. You will be offered to take a cruise at another time or be refunded your money.

This could end up being like Tropical Storm Allison, in that it looks like it might just stall out over Houston for three days and rain nonstop. My family are busy moving farm animals to high ground just west of Houston.

I have a few SIGs.

Nothing in North Houston yet. A couple drips, but nothing otherwise.
