This was the mid 80's and they were still using mostly the little armored vehicles, with an M-60 in a roof mount.

One shift I see one of the Peacekeeper vehicles take a corner, headed out to a silo up on Rt 287. Off the roof, there goes an M-60! It skitters across the edge of the road, into the ditch. Some grass and dirt , but really unharmed.

I pick it up, it's unloaded, no belt anyway. Lean it against the passenger seat in the car and head northbound to catch these guys. Just past the Hutterite Colony there they are , just pulling up to the gate by one of the Silos.

I pull in and get out, as I don't want them to see the 60 on the seat. A 2 LT approaches and politely greets me.

I tell him I found something of theirs and it's in the car. I do recall I had to coax him to take a look. To say he turned PALE when he saw the 60 is an understatement.

We chatted, told him we (The Agency) always had a good relationship with the USAF and their Security guys and this incident would go no further.

I will never forget the surprised looks when he went back and got the 3 others out of the vehicle to retrieve the M-60.

I don't care who are - that's funny right there!!

Either that porta john had no door, or you two were really close buddies.

Yet another boating accident at the same base. Gosh, imagine that. What are the odds, huh?

He approached me and an NCO with it dangling by the lanyard and his arm covered in blue shit water halfway up to his elbow and I had to pour a couple water cans on him and his pistol to clean him up. Best part of it was that we didn’t tell anyone because he was already in trouble for falling asleep in his turret over night and op for came and grabbed his saw.. so while we were cleaning our weapons in the arms room that Friday before the safety breif our platoon sgt was ranting and yelling at anyone who made eye contact with him he turns to said soldier and says “Mashburn, you better clean the shit out of that M9!!” And just that NCO that knew about the porta john and I laughed our asses off and I had to explain what the hell was so funny lol.. I’ve never seen an adult man have such an epic melt down over something I thought was so funny in my life. Mashburn had a long week that next week haha

An M240..... Missing? I was from time to time cursed with an M60. I had to tote it everywhere and never let it out of my sight. Ever. Ammo boxes too. And I had to turn it into the Armory after I got off duty.
The only way it would have turned up missing was if I turned up missing, too.
Things must have changed.

Isn't there a movie that started out something like this?

Why replace the group commander? What about the squadron commander(s)? What about the little butter-bar shift commander(s)? How about the detail XO?

Yea, I get it, you got to make a point. But it seems very superficial to replace a guy who has little-to-nothing to do with the day-to-day operations.

Hedley Lamarr: Sorry, I just remembered . . . I am armed.

I suspect there's a difference between missing and stolen. Speculating of course.

How fucking retarded does one need to be to keep that shit where he lived? Evidently this guy thought that if he reported it missing, nobody would come looking for it, especially at his house...

I'll bet this guy turns out to have ties to a gang and possibly cartel connections. One way or another, if this happened with the army, they'd still be on lock down. In 2002 Baumholder was locked down over a set of NVG's that were in a duffel bag on a truck after an FTX. I couldn't (wouldn't) want to imagine what would happen if a weapon was lost....HOLY SHIT, the wrath of the almighty himself would probably pale in comparison. Eek

Yeah, you’re not kidding. I was in Kaiserslautern 09-12 and our xo who made the inventory sheet printed the same serial number twice and that resulted in a 32 hour work day until they realized it was a fucking typo. All over nvg’s.. Yet the Air Force had a building next door to our arms room with a conex container full of singar radios with the door left wide open and nobody around..
we went in and told them and they completely didn’t give a shit. It’s amazing the difference in attitudes about different things beteen us and them

He's going to be turning big rocks into little rocks. When he's done, he's going to make those little rocks into one big rock, and start all over again.

The Airman was an SF troop(Security Forces-they changed from SP-Security Police about 20 years ago). I've seen some that joined the AF because collecting shopping carts at Wal-Mart parking lots was too complicated a task.

My B-I-L is a former Buf navigator who retired in Minot. He says, “the last report on the search is the Full Colonel group commander and Lt. Col squadron commander were walking the highway to nowhere looking for them.”
