Which primer for PVC base boards? Login/Join

I’m using PVC baseboards in the bathrooms and laundry but would like some help selecting what primer I need before paint. Also for a window shelf for plants. Factory PVC white is close enough in color but I’m concerned about yellowing or fading vs a painted surface.

I’ll sand and scuff prep as appropriate.

Give the pvc a light sand to break the gloss and prime with STIX. And Stix is tintable

Replaced a bunch of rotted outside trim with PVC. Sanded a few pieces but found it too messy and time consuming. Bulk of it I just wiped down with acetone to take the gloss or oils off.

Hit it with Kills primer, then the 3/4 stuff from Lowes.

Bear in mind, it was a 6 month; fix up the house to sell situation, so no idea how long it will last, but I would do it again.

KILZ Adhesion Interior/Exterior Primer is designed for priming surfaces such as PVC.

Stuff works great.

We used to get pvc trim boards pre-primed. Might want to see if it’s available near you.

Reprimed trim, doors etc is a shipping primer to protect from dirt and contaminants. Stanley doors had to pay millions after claiming pre primed already, just paint. There was 1000’s of cases of the paint failing.

Preprime= reprime

In probably over 1000 doors and literally miles of trim we installed we never had an issue with paint peeling… of course we used quality paint in our custom homes…

I've used a fair amount of Versatex PVC, and they suggest not using primer. They instruct to apply acrylic latex paint directly to the trim.

If the paint manufacturer requires a primer for their warranty, they say that you should use this:

Absolutely the most important aspect. Quality, Many contractors I deal with do not unless specced or requested

Quality paints with modern chemistry now provides incredible adhesion, an example is the ability to apply latex over oil without any issues is not uncommon, it’s actually the norm after full cure
